bees nest - best way to kill the bastards ?

Was looking around the man cave today and found this bees/hornets nest ........ it's a biggin :D Aprox. 12 - 14 inches wide and 12 " tall and no idea on the depth . A military flame thrower :D would be my first tool of choice but sadly none available to rent near me :( As you can see in the pic the entry hole is clearly visible , is the best plan of attack to unload a full can of bee/wasp spray into it ? I would wait until almost dark so they would be some what dormant .......... until the death spray starts flowing :D Any other suggestions ? No I am NOT going to call " the guy " :D

$20

Tractor Supply, Home Depot, etc have similar.

I didn't know how much I needed this until I bought one to melt frost in a footing.

KFC911 08-03-2019 12:41 PM

Naw....don't wait until right before dark....we want to see the video clearly ;)

KFC911 08-03-2019 12:43 PM

And don't use that hornet spray that shoots 30 eleven feet either....get up close :)

herr_oberst 08-03-2019 12:45 PM

Public service announcement. Don't kill bees, they're dying fast enough without any additional violence. Once they're gone, we're hosed.

(But that looks like a big ol' honkin' paper wasp nest. Bring out the fire. *****ing *****ers)

rfuerst911sc 08-03-2019 12:46 PM

Drinking beer is a done deal no issues there :D The mini flame burner would probably work but I'd feel more comfortable with the bee/hornet spray . Assuming they don't break out of the hives walls the only place they can exit is that hole which will be flooded with the bee spray . But thanks for posting ......... they die tomorrow night !

masraum 08-03-2019 12:49 PM

If they are bees, then don't kill them

If they are wasps, hornets, etc..., then go ahead, but if they are bees, you can call someone that will come move the hive for you.

dafischer 08-03-2019 12:49 PM

Just be prepared, as any survivors will be exceedingly angry.

those are not bees

you MUST kill the Queen - all the rest are like appendages on a many headed hydra

I suggest a stand-off weapon. Napalm or a flame-thrower would be best, but a shotgun blast will work.

Once you destroy the nest, the Queen will die unless inside the cliff face itself.

stevej37 08-03-2019 01:00 PM

Gasoline or Kerosene is your best bet.
Use a 1 or 2 gal pump sprayer and hose the nest down.

pmax 08-03-2019 01:02 PM

You're welcome, at your own risk !

Post the vid.

Not that, Raw' !

Cajundaddy 08-03-2019 01:03 PM

Looks like a hornets nest, not honey bees. If you can, just leave it alone and they will go about their business. If you must destroy it, the wasp/hornet spray is the ticket. A 12 pk of beer, vidcam on a tripod, and getting in nice and close so you don't miss are essential.

KFC911 08-03-2019 01:10 PM

The one's I've shot with 25' spray were hanging....if you can shoot that Diana worth a hoot...even drunk that big ol' hole is easy-peasy imo :). Doesn't even take that much....soak that hole....it'll be the middle one that ya aim for when it's time....

Drunk, after a rain, just before dark :)

....or whenever ....if you can shoot straight!

rfuerst911sc 08-03-2019 01:15 PM

I agree it is not a bees nest but a hornet or wasp's nest , I wouldn't kill normal bees . The suggestion of a garden sprayer with kerosene or similar is one I had not thought of . I do have diesel fuel in pour cans so could go that route . While I would love to just leave it until cooler weather the cooler weather is 4 months away and I don't want to risk injury to myself/wife/grand kids so action needs to be taken . And there will be no video ........ if I have to I'll post the results from the ER :D

I also had not considered a shotgun blast now that would be fun ! It would be a close quarters shot would # 6 or # 7 shot be a good choice ? Two well placed shots do the trick ?

that will work great except I would not want to get that close

maybe lure a teenager into doing it - esp. at night

pavulon 08-03-2019 01:23 PM

Take a hose up to the edge and turn it on real slow. The paper will absorb the water and the thing will fall off of the dirt wall. The wasps will move on.

KFC911 08-03-2019 01:26 PM

A few summers ago I wuz lighting a charcoal grill beneath a big ol' pin oak in my parents' back yard early afternoon. Didn't know wtf came outta nowhere (above) and zapped me on the arm....he was pissed :(

Then I got pissed....I keep a can in my F150....a few seconds "instant death" spray is all it takes....in the hole. I have notches on my can....at least 5 :)

Bees good....hornets gets spray, yellow jackets in the ground get 4-5 oz of gasoline in a bottle stuck in their hole....fumes get the whole network.

I’ve got the same issue - (Hornets nest in a tree off the front walkway) will carefully get after it this evening and soak with Wasp/Hornet spray.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564871472.jpg

rfuerst911sc 08-03-2019 02:44 PM

Good luck with your soaking tonight , please update with the results .

.

All that will result in is a swarm of pissed off wasps... you best be ready to boogy if you shoot it and they can fly fairly fast.

LWJ 08-03-2019 03:19 PM

I’ve done this more than once.

Get an electric bug zapper

Put is near. Closer is best.

Let it do its thing. It should really jump for a while.

After the occupants are 80-90% gone, hit it with a hose / shovel.

Done.

freeform911 08-03-2019 03:26 PM

Hair spray and a lighter...

fintstone 08-03-2019 03:52 PM

I had a huge hornets nest like that on my house. It sprayed it several times from about 10 feet away over several days. Each time it killed some until eventually all were gone. You should do it after dark when they are on the nest to do the most damage....and in the daytime, they will chase you down as there will be many out flying around that will come back to you violating the next. Hornets boil out of a big nest by the hundreds or even thousands...so have a plan and make part of that plan to stay away for the rest of the day. Even at light, if you spray the nest, hornets will follow your flashlight to try to sting you.

KFC911 08-03-2019 03:56 PM

Are you guys using something like Spectracide Commercial Wasp & Hornet Killer? They don't come out the hole....nope...from 20' away :).

Lots of experience here....

JavaBrewer 08-03-2019 04:14 PM

Beer and Urine

I say drink a case of beer, get up close and whiz into that entry port circled in red. :)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564877528.jpg

Non toxic approach...what about that expanding foam stuff, fill that turkey with it, then set it on fire the next morning.

My choice, fire, hair spray and lighter would work great.

fintstone 08-03-2019 04:20 PM

I have used serval brands (Spectacide and Hot Shot among others) that are good for 18-20 feet on the hornets here...and after an entire can, 4 or 5 hundred come out. About 100-150 fall and die and the rest chase my butt across the field. Wasps drop on the spot...but not hornets.

This is what they looked like when I sprayed mine:

rfuerst911sc 08-03-2019 04:22 PM

I think I will pass on the urine stream or Great Stuff approach . Also not going to do the shotgun blast . So down to wasp spray or 🔥

I've got the smaller version and must say that burning the weeds growing through the walkway pavers is about a million times easier than trying to pull them out.

it will knock the nest down and it will rot away

you did not copy the part where I said use a stand-off weapon, which is what a shotgun is (for hornets)

of course, the best thing is to nuke it from space

that'll work -- if he has a long electric cord; it looks pretty far from an outlet

daepp 08-03-2019 04:43 PM

Soak with diesel from above - light from below.

A little anti-climatic. Shined the flashlight on the nest and soaked the opening with Raid Max Foaming Wasp & Hornet spray. Knocked a couple hornets off that were late back to the nest and continued to empty the can. Completely soaked the opening and foamed the nest. Tomorrow will tell if I need to treat this again. I do not know how I had not seen this earlier as it is larger than a football in size.

Zeke 08-03-2019 05:12 PM

I've shot small nests with hornet/wasp spray and some always beat it out of there. And they pretty much know the location of the attacker so you better relocate quickly.

No advice on eradication. I let wasps live in peace as long as they aren't near a door. They eat insects. With the current SoCal daytime mosquito problem we need all the help we can get.

Not a 'Tri-Five' Chevy... technically...

It's a 55 or 56 only, not enough definition to say which.

The 57 had a totally different dash.

Bi-Five???? :)

Tri five is a reference to '55='56='57.

For the nest...the wasp sprays work. Once you get a kill, burn the paper nest.
