Bathroom remodel Q: tile under toilet, or around?

I'm remodeling the master bath and will be laying new ceramic tile down and replacing the toilet among other things and have a question. .... I think I know the answer but want to hear from the BTDT peanut gallery:

Do I set the toilet on top of the tile, or set the toilet first and tile around it?
The tile will be set on concrete slab if that makes any diff.
Tanks.

Tile goes everywhere but the drain hole for the john. John goes on top.

Think about it - how challenging it would be to tile right against the rounded shape and what happens if you ever change your toilet ...

Aside from the height of the flange, which may be too high.It is
far easier to tile to the flange. It doesn’t have to be pretty.
Tiling around the toilet ( as mentioned above ) would be quite challenging.

tile under toilet. cutout for drain flange. depending on how much higher the new tile is you can get an wax seal extension for about 8 bucks.
I just finished a complete redo of my downstairs bath.

They make lots of different seals for the toilet to set on, so don't worry too much about the flange height.

Tanks for the input.
That's how I did the main bathroom and how I was kinda planning to do this one, but it wasn't based on any real expertise to say that was right.

I feels better now, there'll be a little something extra in your check next week

OK, next question while they're free:
I know about the wax seals, but at home despot I saw these "wax ring replacements" that seem to be made of blue silicone or something, and advertised "no leaks guaranteed" and such nonsense.
but it was $8 bux, so of course I bought an old school wax seal for $2.

So what's the deal with these new-fangled seals, are they real or infomercial fodder?

That is the extension wax ring that I mentioned. It works great. I decided to use it because i raised my floor almost 3/8 ". The flange was now flush with the floor instead of being above the floor, which is the ideal placement. I decided to go with the extension because 1. I didnt want any leaks 2. Because I didnt want to have to do the job a second time. To me 8 bucks is cheap insurance.

P.S. you peel the plastic sheet off the bottom of the black part were it has the flange. It is a wax ring and it will seal just great.

We used to demo out a lot of bathrooms because of wax seal failures, especially when the water went between vinyl flooring and the underlayment. By the time you notice it from above, it can be a nasty mold factory. We were happy to demo, but any toilet installed while we were onsite was done by a plumber. I was never willing to risk one of my guys getting it wrong.

Never seen the newfangled ones in use, which probably means they don't fail. At least yet.

Should you not be using porcelain, rather than ceramic, tiles for flooring?

Just remodeled two bathrooms and you want to TILE UNDER TOILET! Does not require more material and labor when you sort it out and a larger open space just leaves a conduit for any leakage to get away and do damage.

The big question is WAX seal versus RUBBER OR POLY SEAL?

When I was younger and not as smart as I am now, lol, I did linoleum around my toilet and caulked it. A couple of years later I had to replace the toilet.
That's what they make the rugs for that go around the toilet right? To cover up the gaps.

Using the formula below, raising the toilet higher will allow more potential energy to accelerate mr hankey an additional 5.83 m/s on it's downhill plunge.

Tile under the toilet, set the closet flange on top of the tile. If you don't wish to replace the closet flange (after thinking through the error of your decision) pay particular attention to the thickness of the wax ring that you use. You want to get a decent amount of compression on it, which may mean using a thicker one, or two of them.

Hard to say, since I don't know what type of flooring that you will be using.

Make sure you get the flooring dead flat in all directions at least beyond the area of the toilet base.

Another item of possible interest:

One of my favorite places to spend money used to be Pacific Sales.
I've bought 2 refrigerators, a cooktop, an oven, a dishwasher, and a toto toilet from them over the years.

i went there last Friday and was disappointed big time in the poor customer service, pricing, and overall store appearance.
I don't know if things changed because they were bought out by best Buy, but I won't be going back.

In a way they did me a favor: the toto toilet i was going to buy from them was $450.

I found it on (can't believe I'm saying this) ... Amazon for $169 delivered.
it showed up on my doorstep yesterday.
https://www.amazon.com/TOTO-CST744E-01-Two-Piece-Elongated/dp/B0031QAHAI

I figure they're just one more brick and mortar store that will soon go away.
