Coyote Barking

Just now, as if celebrating the Seahawks victory over the unbeaten 49'ers, a single coyote was barking in the briars behind my house. Yelping incessantly, for a couple of minutes while travelling substantial distance. Near enough to shoot, though I never saw it. A hundred yards or better, total distance covered by the coyote.

It was only recently, here on PPOT, I learned that coyotes can bark. I wonder what on Earth would motivate a coyote to bark/yelp incessantly for dozens of yards and a couple of minutes, and then continue into the distance. Anybody?

Perhaps the coyote was a Tom Brady fan just realizing Russell Wilson is a WAY better quarterback. Sammy?

usualy they bark to define/defend territory or a kill...but they also may bark or howl is they have stepped in a trap and are dragging it...or maybe trying to lure a small dog out for dinner.

Thx. This coyote was covering substantial ground. It sounded injured, but I don't think it was. Perhaps it was trolling. Like the guys on PARF.

Hmm... down in Lacey, moving through the woods and barking at night, for no apparent reason... hmm... strong possibility it was not a coyote. Maybe someone who thinks he's a coyote...

That was I that heard the singular barking sometime back. I put out cams for several weeks...never heard it again. No 'yotes on the cams....lotsa deer, small critters and a fox that is no stranger...I'm thinkin' it was the fox...would match the eyes I lit up too...

Love living here on the side of the mountain, with our stunning views.
Having a driveway that mimics the Pike's Peak hill climb, pre-asphalt, is a hoot.

Not long ago, heard a series of barks followed by a high-pitched, relatively short howl.
Stepped out on the deck, and a lone coyote was going down the road, out in the open.
Bark-bark-howl, then move about 100 feet. Bark-bark-howl, then another 100 feet or so before another identical series.
Interesting behavior, fun to watch.
When Wile E. got to the switchback below the deck, I clapped once. Startled the snot out of him, and he ran off, staying out on the road vs. diving into the forest.

When in gig Harbor, sometimes the deer would come out and invade the human's area.
It's obvious that my house in in their territory. We enjoy living amongst the critters.

They do bark! my cousin shot this one yesterday morning, and had to bring it over and show me. You just don't see this color very often, about 45lb male. Then last night we went out at my place and shot another one, but I forgot my phone, so no photos. They are getting way overpopulated here, so we are trying thin them out a bit. They are getting about 50-75% of the fawns now.

I've heard them bark. I once heard a pack of them barking madly when they took down a deer.

There is a crap load of yotes in the river valley to the north of the house. A few years back, they got to be so bad that I saw them hanging around on the playing fields after the elementary school let out.
They disappeared for a while after that so I imagine that the city cleaned out a few dens.
