Crown molding
My new house has some cool details like these curved details at the top of the walls. I decided to dress them up a bit. Veneers are curly maple and walnut. House is over 70 years old, and has not a single straight line.
        Have to decide what color paint for the walls. |

Thanks, all. I'm at that stage after three days working on it where all I see are the flaws, especially in photos. Gotta get some maple flavored wood putty.

With respect, I would not call that crown or molding. That's more of a frieze and a band.

We trim windows/doors in a similar way.
 Will there be an island under the pendants ?(where the dog is)

I plan on trimming the windows with fir casings, which will also make up the baseboards. My goal is to remove every shred of MDF from the house. I hate that crap. Yes—the island is currently sitting out on the deck. Took it out when the hardwood floor went in. |

I used to think that way. If you don't get mdf wet, it doesn't move (less callbacks for us)
Real wood never stops, and requires touchup every few years. So for painted trim, even my own house, I'd use mdf, but primed pine for bathrooms and window sills. Don't use oil based putty with MDF, it soaks in and can puff up a little. Veneer can be fun. I veneered a set of carpet grade treads in my own house with oak. Nobody can tell.

When I owned my restoration company, I came to despise MDF, which swells up when you sneeze on it. Also dislike OSB, especially for roof decking. I love real wood, and am happy to keep it maintained.

The prospect of doing a couple hundred linear feet of hemlock shoe molding around the bottom of the fir was daunting, so I bought this bad boy. It was expensive, but worth it to my artificial knees. Allowed me to do the whole main room in one day, vs about three or four days if I'd been lying on the floor trying to get a finishing nail driven into a 3/4 strip.
 My trim and finishing work could be charitably described as "Soviet style" but I like the overall look. Tomorrow I'll climb down and spend the day oiling the new pieces to match the fir.
