The US has been wanting to buy Greenland for a very long time.

I should add that, strategically, as long as Greenland remains controlled by the Dutch who cares...

But should say China buy it... or Russia... I suppose that Canada taking control would be no big deal, eh?

Oh wait, was this thread designed to snicker at the President as a buffoon, in an effort to feel superior via denigration of a successful POTUS?

My bad, carry on.

My dad was stationed in Frobisher Bay during the Korean war. He said it was the most miserable place on earth.

Crap I thought Frobisher Bay was part of Greenland, it's in Canada.

I had to look it up. Yeah, it across the way from Greenland, but likely just as miserable.

But their ya go, if anything the US should buy Canada. Maybe offer Trudeau a Billion dollar credit at Amazon's costume and apparel section. And some rainbow flags as a free gift.

I'll trade ya straight across, Greenland for Puerto Rico.

No, I'm not talking about the Bronx, but I'll throw that in too if it'll sweeten the deal.

MARKETING!

The story I heard is the vikings that first settled there knew they could get new people to move there if it was called Greenland.

From what I read, the USA has offered to buy Greenland twice before. Evidently after WW2, we offered and they had the same reply, NO.

When my dad first started his career as a pilot in the USAF he had to go to Thule Air Base in northern Greenland on a regular basis. He said the locals all said there was a naked woman behind every tree. But of course there is no tree within several hundred miles. He hated the place. When his next assignment came up, he had a choice of three locations. That is when we moved to the Hawaiian territories.

Back when we bought Alaska, lots of people complained and said it was a really dumb idea and waste of money.

They even called it Seward's folly.
We paid $7.2 mil fer it.

Agree. However the strategic thinking is born out of shipping and a projected more open NW passage. Not due to Global warming, but due to polar volcanism.

Quote:
Scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have found new evidence to support a theory that the breakup of Antarctic ice may be caused in part by a massive geothermal heat source, with output close to the scale of Yellowstone National Park.
A geothermal heat source called a mantle plume – a hot stream of subterranean molten rock that rises through the Earth's crust – may explain the breathing effect visible on Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land and elsewhere along the massive ice sheet.

While the mantle plume is not a new discovery, the recent research indicates it may explain why the ice sheet collapsed in a previous era of rapid climate change 11,000 years ago and why the sheet is breaking up so quickly now.

"I thought it was crazy. I didn't see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it," said Hélène Seroussi of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The Russians are very interested.

Yeah, but in today's dollars, that $7.2 mil is like a 100 million. (0.1 Billion) So, clearly we got ripped off.
