Volvo air bag service message - Help
Today my wife was driving our 2010 Volvo XC90 and she noticed the dash display had the following message: " SRS- airbag service urgent " . Any ideas why this message has appeared ? And any way for me to diagnose or fix ? I don't think it related but yesterday I installed a trailer wiring harness . It is a harness designed for this vehicle and plugs into the tail light wiring . Any help appreciated .

I had a similar issue. My research says the light will come on often after an interruption in the power supply. Always disconnect the negative terminal first before any electrical work. YMMV. It was cleared by a friendly mechanic, some will charge more but the avg cost to reset was about 65 bucks.

When I hooked up the trailer wiring harness I did NOT disrupt any power , I disconnected the connection at the tail lights one at a time , plugged in the harness and went to the other side . Hmmm now that I think about it I briefly pulled off the hot lead to the electric power center at the back of the vehicle to add the hot wire for the harness . Thanks for the reply

You might have a draw on the system with the harness. Try disconnecting it and disconnect the + and - battery cables and touch them together for 30-60 seconds. Reassemble and see if the light comes back on.
If the light comes back on, it could be anything in the SRS system (such as a passenger weight sensor) or the clock spring. If you turn the wheel all the way to one side then to the other to make a U-turn and the light comes back on, you need a new clock spring. You'll need software installed after you replace the clock spring.

It's a steering angle sensor. In CA, it's about a $1K job at a dealer. Being that this light came on a day after the trailer wiring harness, I suspect there's a draw as my service manager suggested.

A mechanic friend of mine has a fancy car analyzer and he knows how to use it . I plan on tomorrow morning having him hook it up and get into the air bag diagnosis section . We will see what we can do .

The devil lives in the Volvo computer system. Everything is related to something it shouldn't logically be related to. The alarm system battery being dead can cause the sunroof not to close on my 04 S60R.

With only 45,000 miles on it I hope the clock spring lasts longer than that ! Hopefully my friend can reset the light and that's all it is . Thanks for sharing the good info guys , I will update later today .

My 2004 V40 that we owned since new developed a random airbag fault at about 90k miles. Would go have it reset then 2 months later it would happen again. Dealer and an indy shop never could figure it out. Without the fault the system tested normal. Only options they gave me were to replace the offending bag and associated wiring harness which was $$$. Just bought a scanner and reset it myself whenever it happened. Sold the car at 105k.
Honesty aside from that my V40 was one of the best cars I've ever owned. I've had a lot of different cars and the V40 is one of the only ones I miss to this day. Sent from my Galaxy S9 using Tapatalk

I am happy to report that the issue has been resolved at least short term . My buddy hooked up his fancy $3,000.00 diagnostic tool and did a search of all fault and trouble codes . After a minute the tool was done and there were maybe 15 or so issues. We looked at each one and it became quite obvious all were electrical in nature . It seemed plausible that all could have been from me removing the power wire to the fuse block in the rear of the vehicle .
He cleared the ECM and the warning sign and the red air bag light were gone . Drove home 15 miles and all was good . Time will tell it it is really fixed but it looks like it is . With the help of this forum I dodged a financial bullet ....... thank you 😊 |
