Looks like it was about enjoying hard acceleration, rather than actual competition.

I have driven a friend's Lamborghini on the track several times, and have never gone full throttle in first gear. When entering the track, 1st gets gets it rolling, and only after the revs are climbing in 2nd to I slowly roll on the throttle.
Though well-engineered, why put that much torque on the axles/CV joints when it's not necessary?
Just hot laps, no trophies or prize money anywhere around. The guy wants his car back intact.
At Porsche Parade in 2018 the Michelin drive and compare was a fun drag race. They had two Cayman S cars all set up for launch control. Just stand on the brakes, floor the throttle, and let off the brakes and off like a rocket.

The two Caymans did that all day long, for two days. No issues. The same guys this year were there this year, only it was a blast run on a super nice go-cart track. They were saying they do that same type of event for other makes of cars. The said the Porsche PDK is the one car brand they know it will just perfect with no issues. Other brands, not so much.

More fun to do it manually. I have the ability to switch every driver's aid through a "secret" combination of switch presses.
Absolutely, more fun to try to do it yourself. Your R8 sound like quite a bit of fun.

Drag racing is the new thing. Hard to drive anywhere without someone trying to race you on the traffic lights.
It's hardly new. It's been going on as long as I'm aware. As a kid, you try to race cars that you've got no chance against just to see what something like your car can do. That's why so many folks stand at the exit of a C+C event, to see the cars take off. I used to have folks try to race me in my old '88 targa. I haven't gotten as many folks trying to screw with me in the Boxster, but then I only put 4-5k miles a year on it. Hell, I used to have folks try to race me in the miata. It only had 133hp and corvettes and mustangs and camaros would try to race me.

True Steve...

A friend says that my car is a Honda, Mustang and Skyline magnet.

On a related note; I have heard that Lamborghini has a limited number of "launches" before the warranty gets impacted. Have not heard the same about Audi even when the R8/Huracan are fraternal twins.

It would be my guess it started the first time two teenagers in ancient Rome had daddy's chariot for the evening.

Naaaa. It happened with the dad's of the teenagers first before they had kids. Two guys bragging in a bar, and the race is on.

I agree. Most likely, the owners of these cars have not touched the suspension settings.

On the other hand, a McLaren P1 GTR comes factory standard with a lot of negative camber.
