Anyone here a member of a community service group like Kiwanis, Lions, etc?

Just wondering what membership is like. I’m thinking it’s a social club mainly for retirees with opportunities to give back to the local community. Is that basically what those clubs are about? I’d like to give back but don’t know what membership commitment entails.

Went to a few Moose Meetings years back.
Played cards and drank beer....that was the agenda.
Euchre was the game of choice.

WHen I was a kid my paternal grandparents were members of the Moose club. I don't know if they ever did anything community related. I feel like the Moose club may have had some sort of other thing going on "Moose Heart" or something like that. But mostly, I think it was a place for my grandparents to go eat, drink, and socialize. I remember going there with my parents and grandparents lots of times. I'm just not that social.

I believe it was in the 90's when I went. Pints of beer for members went for $1.50
If you weren't sponsored or a member it cost $2.50

Yes, I am a life member of the Moose, Fleet Reserve and Elks.

All to things to help their communities in different ways. I I am also a Master Mason, Shriner and 32nd degree Scottish Rite.
Members of different organizations come from all walks of life, many have military backgrounds, so are use to giving of themselves.
I want suggest you seeing if anyone in your immediate circle of friends are members of any of the groups you are interested in, if not, reach out to the different organizations see if you can join them in their social quarters and see what kind of people are there.

MooseHeart is for children.
https://www.mooseheart.org/

Then you have Moosehaven, a retirement community.
All the above groups also do fundraising and collecting supplies for schools, veterans groups, animal shelters ect.

I thought it because Moose like to drink

I'm just pokin' fun at ya Byron .... when I was a youngin', you couldn't buy mixed drinks here in NC, but you could have "your own bottle" (brown bagging it was called), behind the bar at private clubs, etc.

It had a reputation

I'm a social outcast tho' ..... proud member of the Pelican Club and that's about it....

I am the secretary of our Lions club.

Honestly, I think service clubs are dying a slow death.

At 48 I am one of the youngest in our club. Lots of old guys stuck in their ways and no room (tolerance) to innovate to involve younger people. It’s sad actually.

Naw .... back then mini-bottles didn't exist .... pints and fifths did tho' .

When I moved to Jax, mixed drinks being served in bars and restaurants here in NC was only a recent thing .....

Jax Liquor's drive thru service blew my mind .... but we had to drive to the beach every Sunday for beer .... which wasn't a bad thing

Oh yes, Jax Liquors and the Happy Jax lounges. The day when you could pull through the drive through, and order a set up, a cup of ice, can of Coke and a mini bottle of liquor .
When we would go to the Ye Mystic Revellers Ball, we would hire a limo , go through the drive through and make a big order, man those were the days, I never should have let them membership expire.

My dad was very active in the Lions Club back in the 50s and 60s. We found some stuff recently when we were moving my mom.

Wasn’t Fred Flintstone the Grand PoohBah of the Water Buffaloes?

Moosehaven was the other one that I was thinking of, but couldn't put my finger on. Being in FL, I think I remember hearing the most about that one.

I was active in both Lions and Rotary clubs over the years, but since moving South I am not attached to a club. Lions were active with eyesight issues in children and Rotary supports various good things like Scouts, community improvement, etc. Each club had meetings each month, did community fund drives, etc. Did good community stuff, mostly smaller town oriented. Overall a very positive group of men, back then mostly small business owners, bankers, etc. with some retired guys. All had resources able to make contributions to whatever the clubs decided to support. Neither had a clubhouse, met in restaurants over a meal. Elks and Moose seemed to be mostly social organizations, had great parties. I also belonged to those over the years. Elks is more exclusive. Both had very nice buildings and clubhouses for socializing. Back then all were strictly men's clubs with woman's auxiliaries. I had an uncle in the local Kiwanis and I know they did good community stuff, not a drinking society like some others.
