2001 GMC dually brakes - suggestions please

So my 01 diesel 4x4 dually is leaking power steering fluid like the Exxon Valdez ! So I pulled the front left wheel and found two lines that rubbed a hole into each other . But I inspected the brake pads/rotor and I am getting close to replacement time . The truck has always stopped ok but not great .

She weighs 7300 pounds on her own and I am eventually going to carry a truck camper weighing 2600 pounds AND the possibility of pulling a boat ( small ) or a car trailer with Porsche on board . So any recommendations on brake rotors and/or brake pads ? Would you go ceramic or semi metallic on the pads ? Any particular brand that are known to perform better ?

I am going to plan on replacing all four rotors and pads but will start on the front . eBay sure has a lot of reasonably priced brake packages but I don't know what is good or bad . So for you guys that are carrying and towing heavy loads what brakes you using ?

When towing, the issue is the trailer's brakes. They need to be up to the job.

I use ceramic pads from Napa Auto, and never had any problems.

The reason rotor prices have dropped is that now they can machine a set from blanks (no bolt pattern, center hole diameter, etc.) by CNC and robotics. This means no inventory, just made to order parts. Pads are the much cheaper side of the story so the package is still a money maker.

Anyone have a preference/suggestion on brake pads ? Semi metallic or ceramic ? Does brand matter ?

I think so given your intended use. I'm sure there are some good pads available other than the cheapest supplied. If you deal with the right company they should offer an upgrade. IDK about SM vs, ceramic. cstreit does.

When I did the brakes on my dually, I went with the Super/Severe Duty ones from Napa. From what I could figure out, they were actually made by Hawk. They really did seem to make an improvement in pedal feel, bite and shortened up the stopping distances.

I believe ceramics should keep the dust off your wheels. SM should be better for stopping when towing or hauling weight but can be a bit tough on rotors.

Several folks outside of this forum have also suggested the NAPA severe duty pads I will have to look into those . I did see Hawk does make pads for these trucks . I fixed the PS leak yesterday had a hard line that wasn't clocked properly and it rubbed a hole into it So now that repair is done I can start thinking about doing the brakes . Thanks guys
