The way to 'mark' time (or slow time's perception down) is just that — mark time. What I mean is you need to mark moments and events during the year. You can mark it monthly but it won't mean as much as yearly. An obvious example is a vacation. Most of us can't mark too many of those, so you need to find more ways to experience an adventure. Going to a memorable cars and coffee is enough as long as it's unique and not something you do regularly. Meeting someone famous or a similar happening definitely helps.
Completing a significant project will drive a stake in your timeline while ongoing dragged out projects have the opposite effect. A remodel or significant purchase can suffice, but you have to put some thought and effort forward or it's just another credit card expense.
When I raced anywhere other than Willow Springs, that marked time as it was a new experience. Even injuries and some health issues will mark time, just not your favorite items to remember.
And that's the key, you have to be able to recall your significant events by the week, month and year, within reason. As time goes by, at least your general age at the time.
One more example to make my point clear: you can go to a car show or you can take a car to a car show. That works well unless you do this regularly. Go create some adventures and get going! Routine is the enemy.
