Cool Science (vantablack) and car content (BMW) - pretty cool

I think vantablack is very cool. This takes the fad of matte/flat paint to a whole new level.

I suspect it’s just a show car. I’m sure that some rich Arabs will end up with that paint, but probably not much else.

Last I checked there was only one person ALLOWED to even use Vantablack, they paid for the usage.. (I guess paid the right price.) Sux for the ' regular Joe ' who wants to Vanta- his own '71 F100 or something... I suspect when this becomes widely available it will have it's moment in the sun just as flat black did a few years ago.

I think the key is that only one artist is licensed to use it for artistic purposes, not that only one person in the world can use it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vantablack
Quote:
Vantablack S-VIS, a sprayable paint that uses randomly-aligned carbon nanotubes and only has high absorption in the visible light band, has been exclusively licensed to Anish Kapoor's studio for artistic use.[16] This has caused outrage among some other artists, including Christian Furr and Stuart Semple.[17][18] In retaliation, Semple banned Kapoor from buying the strongest shade of pink that Semple had developed.[19][20] He later stated that the move was itself like performance art and that he did not anticipate the amount of attention it received.[21] In December 2016, Kapoor posted an Instagram post of his middle finger dipped in Semple's pink.[22] Semple then created another shade of paint made from crushed glass as a retort to Kapoor, and later barred Kapoor from buying other products of his, including his extremely strong shades of green and yellow paint as well as a paint sold as Black 2.0, which is nearly indistinguishable to Vantablack VBx, despite being acrylic. If one wanted to buy any of these paints, they would have to sign a contract stating that they were not Anish Kapoor and didn't intend to give the paint to Kapoor.[23][24]

Nanolab, a Waltham, Massachusetts-based carbon nanotube manufacturer, partnered with Boston artist Jason Chase to release a nanotube-based black paint called Singularity Black.[25] During the first showing of the colour, Chase, alluding to Vantablack, stated that "its possibilities have been stunted by not being available to experiment with," and Singularity Black's release was important to create access.[26]

Artreport.com contributor Jazia Hammoudi opined that the controversy had been manufactured by the media,[27] while the author of an article in Wired magazine suggested that the controversy between the artists and its online response was a spontaneous piece of collective performance art in itself.[21] The manufacturer claims that Vantablack is subject to export controls by the UK, and due to its physical requirements and thermal characteristics, the original Vantablack is not practical for use in many types of art.[28]

Vantablack VBx2, a variant of the non-nanotube Vantablack VBx that is optimized for large area spraying, was used in a "Vantablack pavilion" at the 2018 Winter Olympics.[29]

BMW will show a X6 concept with Vantablack paint at the Frankfurt Auto Show however BMW does not plan on producing the color on production models of the X6 [30]

Vantablack's exceptional properties

Ultra low reflectance - Vantablack absorbs 99.965% of light (750nm wavelength)

UV, Visible and IR absorption - Absorption works from UV (200-350 nm wavelength), through the visible (350-700nm) and into the far infrared (>16 microns) spectrum, with no spectral features.

Very high front to back thermal conduction - excellent for Black Body calibration sources

Super hydrophobic - Unlike other black coatings, water has no impact on the optical properties

Very high thermal shock resistance - Repeatedly plunging a Vantablack coated substrate into liquid Nitrogen at -196°C and then transferring to a 300°C hot plate in air does not affect its properties.

Resistant to extreme shock and vibration - Independently tested, Vantablack has been subjected to severe shocks and vibration simulating launch and staging.

Low outgassing and mass loss - Independent testing to ECSS shows almost undetectable levels of outgassing, CVCM, WVR, RML and TML

Excellent BDRF and TIS performance - Even at shallow angles the levels of blackness outperforms all other commercial super-black coatings

Might be the dumbest thing for a vehicle, actually, could be the cause of many an accident. As for “one artist only” able to use it : I call BS on that move, fye on you Anish Kapor! I love the “bean” in Chicago just like any body but as an artist I see that as provocation! Bring on the boot-leg Vanta!

Yea, I have to wonder how that paint will hold up to a drive to Needles, CA or Palm Springs in the dead of summer. The car will be baking hot. It likely will melt plastic parts like trim pieces. 115 degrees air temp and 250 or more on the black panels. The cabin will be a scorcher when parked in the sun for an hour for lunchtime.

I'm pretty sure this was just a show car. I don't think it's a color that BMW is going to add to their line up. As a show car that is likely to spend all of its time in convention centers, enclosed car haulers and ships, I don't think they are that concerned with "real world" scenarios.
