Do you remember this photograph? In the United States, people have taken pains to banish it from the record of September 11, 2001. The story behind it, though, and the search for the man pictured in it, are our most intimate connection to the horror of that day.

That is a beautiful article about the above picture.

Just a few minutes ago we had the same conversation we've had every September 11th for 17 years. We all talked about what we were doing when we first learned of the attack. We've been telling the same stories for 17 years, and there is still a sense of disbelief that something this horrific could happen.

Thanks for posting Paul,

Agree excellent article.

I remember it like it happened this morning. It was a beautiful morning, back then I watched Matt and Katie. I was sitting on the couch drinking my coffee leisurely putting on my shoes getting ready for work as my one year old daughter ran about the living room.

Then Katie report the first plane hitting. I thought what a freak accident how do you hit a sky scrapper on a day like today? Then the second hit. I thought someone is going to be in big trouble sending those planes out on the wrong flight path. As time went on struggled to believe it was terrorism. My now Ex asked at one point do you think they will fall? Literally as I began to answer "Maybe part of a building may come off but, I don't think they will come all the way down" The first tower started to come down.

I didn't go to work that day.

The people who died were victims and that is tragic.
These are heros:

Yes.

I had to call a friend. She worked in Tower 2, but only on the 20th floor. All got out. And she was back home in Albany the day it happened.

It sucks that I know people from both 9/11 and Lockerbie, who died.

And then there's this.
WTF?

The pictures of the people jumping hit me the hardest for some reason. I don’t know if it’s bravery or desperation that would make someone jump over burning alive. I’m certain they never thought the towers would fall. Nobody did.

Me too.

Most of us had no personal connection (outside of those local to the sites of the attack)...

That's difficult enough to fathom....can't imagine what you guys relive and remember.

Methinks "they" have won....don't want to go there, but we are as divided as we've been since the 60s....US verses US...I blame politics, the two parties, the media....

Can't fathom what happened in NC (Raleigh) yesterday if what is being reported is true...truly disturbing imo.

It's a very sad day for me. Having lost friends, relatives and business associates on that fateful day.

My firm held 3 contracts for the WTC, plumbing, hvac and sprinkler/standpipe maintenance and construction.

I still can not deal with the loss.

That is proof we have forgotten. <-- I waited until 9/12 to type that comment. ;)

In 1993 my cousin (by marriage) worked in maintenance in the towers. That would be when the U-haul exploded in the parking garage and we laughed at he who shall not be named for his lame attempt to take down the towers.

He walked in the next day and quit. Told his boss the Muslims will not stop until they have leveled the buildings and he is not going to sit there and wait for them to do it.

They laughed at him all the way out the door.

He sold his house on Long Island and moved to Florida.

On Sept. 11th 2001, when the second plane hit the towers, he was the first person I thought of, he was right. I wondered if his old bosses still worked there and if they thought of him as well.

On Dec 26th, 1999, I was passing through NY on the way to JFK. I joked that I better take a photo of the towers...I was about 21 months early...

Those pictures hit me hard as well. I watched it live and it changed me forever.

It was late at night here and the news broke in on TV. This was just after the first plane hit.
At that point no one knew what was happening. After the second plane hit it the whole tone of the news reporting changed as people started to realising this was a deliberate attack. During the night they reported the Pentagon being hit. We (in Australia) didn't hear anything about Pennsylvania until the next day.

One thing that stood out more than anything else is the solidarity your people showed during this harrowing time. Much respect!

I am not sure that it is proof "we" have forgotten. It is to me at least, some people are more concerned about being politically correct are ignorant or flat out don't care if it is not happening in their front yard than protecting our country or even their families. Political correctness and foolish politics allowed an abundance of Muslims into our country with out being properly vetted. That is how this woman first got into this (our) country and second how she was voted into office.

The same thing is happening at our Southern boarder.

I once hear a story about a guard moving the blind sheik after his arrest for the 1993 bombing of the towers. The guard made a comment something to the effect. You failed to knock down the towers. The sheik responded "not yet".
