Man Card options - wife helping you wrench / fix stuff
Man Card Thought?
"If your lady is helping you wrench on something, how do you handle this? Whether under sink plumbing, wrenches/screwdrivers/hammers around yard, house, shop............or cars.......... hy·po·thet·i·cal·ly /ˌhīpəˈTHedəklē/ adverb " imagining a possibility rather than reality; as a hypothesis." / fe.male noun "An interesting species to observe and ponder, often exhibits confusing and non-rational behavior with puzzling random emotional outbreaks; often cannot answer a simple question with a simple YES or NO answer " So my question: We talked hypothetically about if she possibly could be trying to mount a lower shock bolt with shock eye off one side to the U groove receiver, (I turned my back for 2 minutes) : ![]() A) SAFEST? You let her figure it out on her own (which she sheepishly did with a "ooopsy" comment, hey it goes in the middle doesn't it?) 😎 yay for her, she's not a girly girl and works hard around the ranch. B) Show proper use of tools, How mechanicals work, Correct her in gentle fuzzy bunny tone of voice (she does knows how a carb internals work ) C) Leave the room and let her finish, then just correct her wrong work later. by yourself, while white lie congratulating her for help out..........Safest Safest? D) grab the tools from her hands and scold the silly fuzzy bunny for wasting your time. E) end the 30 year marriage. Alex, I'll take inner peace and happiness for $2000 please.

My wife helps me on most of the farm projects;
(me on the backhoe, her on a shovel) (me on the chainsaw, her on the loader pulling logs), (me hanging new plumbing, her pre-gluing it) WE work well as a team, but she still has her stuff, and I still have my stuff. She understands most everything I am doing, and can turn wrenches, or order parts if needed. BTW, it is her 54th birthday today, so endless shrimp at Red Lobster (her choice). |

Mr. Lane uses option B (with pretty low level of sweet talk) and has stayed married to Mrs. Lane for over a quarter century. Also has not been stabbed in his sleep or had his coffee poisoned.
Just sayin'. angela

I do not have my wife help, it does not help.
Worst is when she thinks I need help and just dives in. Problem is when we are doing something we have a plan of action in our heads and others plans of action may differ so she invariably goes about it a different way which only ends up making things go less smoothly.

I welcome my wife's help - she's pretty good with tools. In fact she married one!

Wife does lots in/out of the house. EG: Last weekend she pressure washed the whole deck. It's 2000 square feet and no small job. She has skills.
The rolling stock in our household is vast and in constant need of tune-ups, oil changes, brake bleeds, etc. She knows I like to do this on my own so unless she's asked, she steers clear of the garage. Bless her.

Get off my lawn!
|
My wife only uses gardening tools and digs in the dirt, and cuts plants. She will help trim the trees, but she does often place a flower pot on the ground and tell me to dig a hole big enough to plant it. Since getting married I have dug lots more holes than I ever did while single. And I have built several flower beds.
She stays out of my garage, unless I ask her to press the brake pedal to bleed the brakes, (rare since I have a vacuum bleeder) or hold some thing or other while I get a bolt and nut started. Never under the car. She is a great laundry service, and decorator. Not much of a mechanic. I have no ideas how to handle the OP situation.

My situation is pretty much like Gen's.
We both have our jobs. My wife does make an awesome sandwich! If I was you, I'd go easy on her as it will only come back to bite you if you don't.

30 yrs of marriage.
sometimes her help is useful, sometimes not. biggest problem is when she cant read my mind. biggest factor keeping us married is she CANT read my mind, i have become very adapt at doing very hard things by myself. we just put up kitchen cabinets,. she helped. going to do the back splash, she wants to help.

My wife would never dream of working on my car. But years ago when I eldest daughter thought she had blown the head gasket on her car, only to find out the block was cracked, I had here strip the engine down. Then clean and paint the engine bay. She actually enjoyed working on her car. She could do most general maintenance by herself.

Both feet in here boys ! Wifey works at the shop, and she has also jumped on board on the rental houses .
She does not really wrench, but will help me bleed brakes, or hold something etc.. She is getting decent at simple rental house stuff like painting, laying carpet together, oultlet and switch covers etc... We work pretty well together, but I just lowered the lift on her foot and broke it . No sammiches for me for a while . I still yelled at her. Told her when she started, that Birkenstocks belong at a GD concert, and have zero business in a shop . My exact words were " it is a matter of when, not if " I like to show her how to do simple things . I can tell she gets annoyed at me, sometimes, but if it is something she has never done, I figure a few helpful hints to help get her going cannot hurt . I always try to set her up for success .

I'm so used to working alone "help" just gets in the way. I do ask MrsWD for help when I need it, but nothing good comes of it when she dives in without a plan of action. It's not just her. It's anyone who thinks they are helping when they aren't. People who like to paint
