hood strut
Been buying Porsche hood strut and they eventually go bad even with little use. I go to disconnect my trickle charger on the 930 and get conked on my head again, it time. Any of you buy aftermarket off amazon, ebay or Rock Auto? Do those last longer? They are less then half the price

I just ordered a set off Amazon for a friend's SC430 a few minutes ago. I'll find out on Sunday. lol Put it this way, $30 off Amazon, or $350 for the pair from an indy. The dealer is something like $600 installed. lol That's some crazy pricing.
As for the Porsche, I ordered the heavy duty ones off Pelican. They worked well for me, and are still working.

I have been using the same hood strut for almost 20 years. Some of you guys might call it a stick, but to me it is a hood strut.

I bought a set for 50 bucks for a friend's Sienna van and it took us both with beer in hand to get it swapped out in under 10 min. Dealer wanted 330 bucks. Oh yeah, he's the type of guy that only know where the gas cap is. |

Rennline makes a pretty slick mechanical one. It's a bit spendy, but probably the last one you would ever need to buy.

Didn't they make 2 styles? A strut type with a lock lever, and a hood prop rod.

Jsut got thinking. My dumb mechanic may try and force the hood close instead of lifting it first to release the latch within the sturt

Pretty much the first job I did on the car after acquiring it - I did the screen wash next, but the hood needed to stay open to work on them... I fitted Stabilus HDs from our host -still on the car and still working perfectly; about 50,000 miles on them now, and the hood has been up and down countless times... After I fitted them, I read a neat idea in tech; just drill through the dead shock and use a hairpin cotter pin to keep the hood up. Which is how I'd do it now - except they're still working perfectly... For example https://www.mcmaster.com/hairpin-clips - about $3 in stainless...

I'm happy with the broom handle solution I've been using in the SC for 15 years.
But... I may become a little more sophisticated and use a Corolla type hood strut. It's manual and kind of clicks (clunks) into place then a manual wiggle to disconnect it. |

I made a nylon sleeve that clips onto the exposed shaft. I can get pics if it helps.
I started with a round piece of nylon, drilled it to the shaft diameter, then cut a slot along the length. It clips into place and is retained by a short leash made of aircraft wire.

There was a Pelican selling the same design that Rennline is now selling. I got a few before he either sold out to them or Rennline "reverse engineered" them.
I also have a fiberglass stick model that bolts to the side of the trunk using an existing hole and has a magnetic cup for the stick to rest in when open. Works fine, can't recall who sells/sold them though.

Just ask any 356 owner about bent hoods.

Or VW bug owners. My first car was a 60 model bug. The hood was broken right at the point someone tried to push it shut.
What amazes me is a buddy of mine has a Pickup, with a camper shell. It is a 1980s pickup, and he put the shell on it back then. The rear glass struts are 30+ years old, and still work fine. They evidently can be made to last forever, but if you sell them, why not make them a disposable item so the sales never end.

Just get the hood struts from FCP Euro.
Lifetime no questions asked warranty. The last set you'll ever have to pay for. |
