You old guys get Shingles vaccinations?

My understanding is that they recommend the new shingles vaccine for folks over 50. The old vaccine is recommended for folks over 60.

Apparently, shingles when you're older can be really bad (worse than when you're young?) causing nerve pain that may be permanent or long term, vision loss and other issues.

In England, they wait until you're 70 to worry about the vaccination.

Anyone partaking?

My Doc gave me the 1st of two shots for the new formula in April. This was a good reminder I need the second shot. So yes and I'm 56.

Yes. You don't want to live through a shingles attack.

I did. My GP strongly suggested it during my last annual physical as I had chickenpox as a child and have a nearly 50% chance of developing shingles.

I got on a waiting list for the first dose; waited about 4 months, was notified that the vaccine had arrived, went in and had the injection. I then signed up for the notification to receive my second injection, and got it after about 10 weeks.

Minor soreness and some pretty noticeable flu-like symptoms after the second dose, but I am glad I received the vaccine and glad I have a much stronger chance of not getting shingles.

Insurance covered both, including the copay.

Dang straight.

My mom suffered with shingles. She said childbirth in the 1950s was not as painful as shingles.

Yep. I'm 54 and got the shot last month. Will get the 2nd in November. Other than soreness at the injection site, I had no issues. My insurance covered it 100% and I was able to get it at the local pharmacy, so no doctor's visit required.

Wow, lots of emphatic "yes."

My grandmother had it a few years ago. I've known a few folks that had in in their late teens / early twenties and they didn't seem to enjoy it.

I was told by my GP that the old shot was marginal at best and anecdotal evidence with friends who got bad shingles after that vaccine confirmed what he told me. He said the new version is much better.

Wow! Not that I know of. I'd better ask my primary care guy the next time I go in for my fifteen minutes of fame.

In case anyone is curious. This is what the CDC has to say about it
https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/shingles/public/index.html

screen shot of ^that^ webpage.

Can you get it after you already got shingles ? or does having had shingles int he last 10 y constitute a vaccination per se ?

I would. I did not enjoy shingles one bit, and I got off lightly (not many residual after effects)

Yes.

I didn't even know what it was, but my GP recommended it, and it's paid for by my Cigna insurance as part of preventative. Also got the pneumonia shot. Funny how many people rebel against modern, preventative medicine. I work with a woman that thinks colloidal silver is the answer, and she doesn't go to doctors. Whatever she does, or recommends, I do the opposite.

I got the old version (Zostavax) and then the new (Shingrix) version. Shingles is something that you don't want.

According to the CDC, yes

https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/shingles/public/shingrix/index.html

Quote:
Healthy adults 50 years and older should get two doses of Shingrix, separated by 2 to 6 months. You should get Shingrix even if in the past you

had shingles
received Zostavax
are not sure if you had chickenpox

There is no maximum age for getting Shingrix.

If you had shingles in the past, you can get Shingrix to help prevent future occurrences of the disease. There is no specific length of time that you need to wait after having shingles before you can receive Shingrix, but generally you should make sure the shingles rash has gone away before getting vaccinated.
