Tell me about Rehobeth Beach, DE

Here now, was here about 18 months ago in thr biga$$ RV, we like the area, weather is OK most of the year, taxes are favorable, gas wa $2.33/gal today, last week in Los Angeles it was around $4.55/gal

Looking at new houses in the $500-$600 range. We’ll look at used homes as well, maybe get a little more space between houses. May keep the SoCAL townhouse, and buy a second place here, its a few hour drive from here to NYC and the Poconos in PA where my daughter, her husband and our 2, 4 an 6 y/o grandsons maintain houses.

Garage
It's called re-homo-th beach by the locals.
Lots of gays there.
Not saying that's a bad thing.
I know several families that Prefer vacationing there because it's more mellow than oc MD.

I’m sure you guys have done your homework, so why Rehobeth?

I can think of ten others places I’d rather live within a 100 miles. Nothing against the place, but it is very much a summer tourist nightmare.

I live on the other side of the bay in NJ. We take the ferry to Lewes/Rehobeth often for the outlets and tax free shopping. It is a nice area. As Paul said it is a nightmare in the summer months with traffic travelling down 1. It is becoming more and more congested every year.

It's Rehoboth. Lived here for 30 years, much better in 1990 than now. Too many people and too much development. Traffic is bad in summer but no worse than any major city year round.

some very expensive houses (closer to beach), terrible traffic in summer, best restaurants on the md/de coast, cheap real estate taxes (dirt cheap), lots of no kids dc types including many gays. you don't have to be gay to live there though. there is some 'in your face' stuff but it's not terrible.

Lewes also worth looking into. Many retirement communities in the area where you get a clubhouse, tennis courts, pool, etc. Lots of NY and NJ folks retire to the area enjoying the ultra low real estate taxes. Grocery option is Harris Teeter. Two stores not too far from Rehoboth. Go Brit is a legit good fish and chips place right on Rt 1. Dogfish has a restaurant right near the boardwalk in Rehoboth proper.

Be very careful about moving to a md or de resort town if your wife is used to cultured type stuff. Rehoboth/Lewes have some semblence of culture but the surrounding areas are utterly void of it. it's a nice little beach town but mid winter it is an entirely different place. The Rt 1 area then is desolate and sad. i've lived just south of there in Md for almost 35 years.

We used to vacation there when the kids were young for the boardwalk, Fun land and the beach. I wouldn’t want to live there year round. My friends own Louie’s pizza on Rehoboth ave. It’s a fixture there.

I used to be a realtor in Delaware. Way cheaper to live near water than the left coast.

Luckily you're old enough that when it washes away due to warming you'll be gone....

I much prefer Cape May.

Yeah, DE taxes better than NJ. Look for a reasonably real town. That's why I prefer Cape May.
If you're going to be there in season, Rehobeth is a bit much.
Cape May has both ocean and Delaware bay beaches.

I grew up just north of there but left in 1965 due to going in the US Navy, Didn't go back until 2003 for my high school reunion. It appeared to not have changed much on 40 years, traffic still bad in the summer, over priced tee shirts and swim suits and I don't think they even had a Walmart or a 7-11! The pace of Delaware as a whole is slower than CA where I live now and I could never move back there as there is still a lot of bigotry and people who wish segregation was still in effect!

During my time lots of famous people had beach houses, Dick Clack, Pres. Eisenhower, the Duponts, ETC. Many of those big houses were converted into a bed and breakfast when we went there in 2003 and I imagine it is the same now? A couple lives in part and the rest is made into 4 or 5 or more bedrooms and the income is nice. If you go south to Bethany or further towards the Indian River inlet the houses are all built high on poles to save them from huricanes but they have great views. If you move there you will end up changing and slowing down.
