Tesla cars run on D/C!

The Tesla cars are powered by D/C batteries that get inverted to run the A/C motor. Edison was the D/C guy, and Tesla was the A/C guy. So shouldn't it be called an Edison Tesla?

I've never seen an a/c battery

Batteries ALL produce DC power. All of them. All they do is store the electricity.

Most cars are called gasoline powered, but there is way more oxygen burned than gasoline or diesel fuel. About 14 time more air than gasoline.

I'm surprised they use AC motors.

It was my understanding that DC motors are better for applications where you need to vary the speed, and AC motors are more efficient at running at a single speed for long periods.

I know that locomotives have been migrating to a/c, but I'm not sure of the reasons why

actually in many cases they are coal powered.

but hey, let's keep pretending.

Modern inverters /VFD's do a fine job of speed control and can be more efficient than DC - even with the conversion from the AC batteries.

I'm a mechanical guy but these modern A/C motors can be nothing short of miraculous - Marathon Black series provide full torque from 0 RPM.

I suppose you could argue that the only DC part of a Tesla is the "fuel tank" (batteries).
The "engine" is AC and the "fuel" is initially provided via AC, then converted to DC to charge the batteries.
If they used DC motors, then the Tesla moniker might be a head-scratcher.

Makes you think about the actual "greenness" of an EV though.

First you produce the energy (primarily via coal/oil/gas).
Then you transfer that energy via long transmission lines to a charging station.
Then you convert that energy to DC to charge a bank of DC Li-Ion batteries.
Then you convert (most) of that DC energy to AC to power the motor.

All of that with the many losses and inefficiencies of transferring/converting/inverting electrical energy along the way.
Not to mention you are starting from a point of far, far less energy-density than gasoline to begin with.

Oh, and your "gas tank" is perpetually "leaking" (self discharge), and is continually shrinking in size (capacity loss).

actually, you are wrong -

Nuclear and natural gas-fired power plants supply about 66% of Maryland's electricity net generation; 27% overall for the US

I believe A/C motors (seven wire) provide significantly greater flexibility than DC but I'm definitely out of my depth.

"in many cases they are coal powered." cannot be true given the low % of coal 'in' US electricity

EIA should be able to tell you what state or county has highest % of coal - but that isn't the issue

saw your MD address so included that too

things have changed fast w/coal
