So "they" closed a thread!

If this happens because you posted something offensive then maybe you need to take a good hard look at yourself.

I like hanging out here but some of the commentary gets really tedious.
It's OK to disagree with someone but that can be done in a respectful way. There's no need for name calling or trolling.

As a suggestion... We could think of this site as "our club".
Would you insult a fellow club member for having a different POV?

JackDidley 11-27-2019 06:03 PM

I am with you on this. I came here after a previous great forum became a hate fest.

DonDavis 11-27-2019 06:15 PM

I not privy to the exact thread to which you refer...but having been here since 1999, ( lurked, joined '02 )...there's been many brouhahas.

Couple things could happen. Probably more, but...

Offender goes to Ban Island for a visit, or, an involved individual will take a hiatus.

Lets hope that trend continues.

Enjoy the weekend!

Sooner or later 11-27-2019 06:33 PM

Mind boggling that it was the 911 valuation thread.

pmax 11-27-2019 06:51 PM

Thread had so much potential until the "regulars" showed up :D

island911 11-27-2019 07:01 PM

meh, supe got a little over exuberant with the little politic jabs.

KFC911 11-27-2019 09:26 PM

I figured it wuz PDS....Porsche Derangment.

Bill Douglas 11-27-2019 10:18 PM

I blame it on auto correct. When I said turn the chick over half way through and do the other side  I meant turn the chicken over half way through and do (as in cook) the other side.

I have a theory that the guys on here that have to keep bringing politics into non-political threads just haven't got enough going on in their lives be it friends, family, work commitments, self worth etc and to fill that gap they poke people with political views to get some sort of reaction/interaction that they're not getting from their daily lives

That theory can be extended to include every thread and post on here, regardless of topic (people who have time to post must have sorely lacking real lives and try to compensate for that with cyber interaction).

DonDavis 11-28-2019 12:13 AM

Captain Ahab, I completely agree. :)

Full disclosure, I read your post a second time using an English accent. Well, maybe some facsimile thereof, and it was brilliant.

I lol’d, fo sho.

No, seriously. That’s the nekkid truth.

Yep...

drcoastline 11-28-2019 02:25 AM

It's the Pareto Principal otherwise known as the 80/20 rule. While we all say and do stupid things from time to time or would have reworded or prefaced a post or comment, I think the 80/20 rule applies on Pelican as with other parts of life. There are a handful of posters that just live to cause turmoil for the other eighty percent. It's just the way life is.

I'm not sure I see a flaw in your logic.

Seahawk 11-28-2019 02:36 AM

My apologies, Folks.

It won’t happen here again by me.

Yes, it started from post one as a high potential capacitor ready to make rapid violent discharge.

Not necessarily, times have changed. Once upon a time a person may start their day sipping their coffee while reading the paper and maybe end the day watching the evening news. Some might end their day hitting the local pub for happy hour and chat with friends. There are also a fair amount on here that are at the end of their careers and have more free time. That doesn't mean their lives are lacking, that means their lives and times have changed. The internet and a forum like this also allows people to spend a little time communicating with people from around the world with generally a similar interest that they may otherwise never know isn't a bad thing.

Now someone with well over 12,000 plus posts in less than four years, an average of 10.5 posts per day, everyday, including weekends, holidays, children's birthdays, anniversaries, etc. on one forum may have a real life that is sorely lacking.

I don't think Superman's thread should have been closed. I think the better solution is 1 week bans for people who fit into Captain Ahab's accurate portraiture.

I trust in Milt's discretion.

cabmandone 11-28-2019 04:23 AM

It was me. I offended by saying 911's would drop in value. The Hell you say!!

Tervuren 11-28-2019 04:24 AM

I am deeply confused, some of you seem to imply that it didn't start political, and that it was just a few that replied that made it political.

Is the locked thread simply responses pulled out of some other thread and put into OT and then locked?

Because the original post that STARTED the thread has THIS under it.

Seems the don't count out the ICE yet thread will be next on the chopping block.

Tervuren 11-28-2019 04:36 AM

Personally, I browse cars, if a car I really want goes into what I can afford, and I have space; I'll buy it.
I'm not too concerned with future values of cars as I already own cars I really enjoy.
If something I want but do not have goes up, I'll just shop some other car.

Take the Supra Turbo, a good example is way out of my present price range, perhaps it will always be out of my price range.
However, the C5 Corvette was not.
So I have a C5 Corvette and not a Supra. I'm happy with either one.

If 911's stay higher than I want to spend, I won't buy one.
Also, I notice as I get older, what I'm willing to spend goes up.
I suppose the real question is about if the 911 upswing is a generational price swing similar to muscle cars; or is it longer lasting?

The 911 has a multi-generational appeal.
This in turn, changes the first question to be if younger set are acquiring the financial situation to keep the higher prices going on into the future.
I think the air cooled cars are safe as it has a lot of appeal to what is currently appealing to the next generation "Steam Punk", I think they call it.
It is just a matter of financial future for the younger generation. The water cooled 911's, I'm not so sure.

The OP trashed the thread............ up until the last two posts, it was a pretty good read.

What the heck is it with the "hurty feelers" on this site?

It's not about "hurty feelings". If people want to discuss politics they should do that in PARF.

This may be hard to understand but a lot of people find political commentary distracting and annoying.

Tobra 11-28-2019 06:15 AM

It is really not that complicated.

One has to "want" to get it though.

That thread started out doomed, crash and burn was its destiny. Whether by intention or error is open to debate. I am sure messages were exchanged.

I am confident we have the right man for the job, thanks man

A great example of this is the Yahoo news stories that are followed by comments. A story about sports, finance, celebs, etc, will always have people trying to turn it into a political issue. Usually every third or fourth comment. Gets very tiring.

Yeah, Raw, there is something OFF about those who throw stones in in glass houses.

This place is just a bull session, right?. Anyone disagree?

Some of you will throw around jabs against whatever sports team, some will throw jabs at individual poster here (who once cause butt hurt that you are still not over)...

So what if Supe made some --as I read them, tongue-in-cheek-- political jabs.

Apparently that makes him fair game to pile-on with how worthless his life is?

c'mon, isn't it bad enough that he suffers so severely from TDS? Do ya all have to pile on top of that too?

Happy T-day you <strike>knuckle</strike> Pelican-heads.

The term is "Hurty Feelers"............. for a reason.

So the thread could have been moved to parf, so the thenthitiff ones didn't shriek off to their safe spaces.........

It WAS an interesting thread.........

^^^^This. I dont post Chevy questions in the Cayman forum. If I want PARF, I can go there.

Whereas, some get their entertainment where they find it......... and have zero desire to play self appointed hall monitor here........

Unfortunately the written word can be one of the worst forms of communication. Written words can be and are interpreted differently by different folks. One man's harmless comment is another man's political insult. I am not a big fan of censorship. If something is posted you don't like, you can easily ignore it. If something on TV offends you, change the channel. Forum admins. have a lot of power over what is said. The last email I got from an admin. on 914world began "dear pathetic $hitbird". (I don't think he likes me) LOL. I would like to see everyone become less thin-skinned when it comes to posts they don't care for. I'm on a few aviation themed forums and one thing I like about them is, everyone uses their real name. Nobody hides behind a user name. There are less insults and name calling (almost never) when everyone knows what your real name is.

You example is counter to your assertion.

Personally, I don't care what anyone's name is, and prefer that people have the utility to put ideas out to stand, or fall, regardless of who says them.

Which pretty much makes my point. Some people might interpret my post much differently. I applaud those who have the "utility to put ideas out to stand, or fall". Personal insults and name calling while hiding behind a user name is a spineless thing to do.
