It was originally called "Black Friday" because it was often the first day of the year that retailers operated "in the black"--they were profitable for the year.

My wife always does all the early sales (I stay home...too many idiots). She said that there was alot of sale items still blocking the isles mid morning, and far less shoppers this year. I just wonder if online shopping is overtaking the store hassles ?

On a vaguely related note, I got an email the other day from some company/site that I've purchased stuff from in the past. It was for a black friday sale. There was a photo of a model using whatever they were selling. The model was a black guy. Not really any issue for anyone to get excited or offended over (assuming we're using common sense), but in this day, I'm not sure that's a good assumption.

Here in Michigan, they're calling today 'Green Sunday'
Dec.1...the first day for legal recreational 'reefer' sales.
The news this morning showed lines of people waiting for the store openings!

Why would anyone be that interested in a reefer? They're everywhere.

https://www.isaacsandisaacs.com/glossary/reefer

I went out one year and got a great deal on a digital picture frame. The next year I went out in the middle of the night and stood in line for 2 hours to get a deal on a TV only to find out that KMart had a limit of a very small number that were to be sold at the sale price. It sucked to stand out in the freezing cold for hours without being told that after the first 10 people, "no sale price for you". That was 15 years ago and I said never again. I have a feeling too many people got tired of being burned by bait and switch and jerks who would run over their mother to get a deal.
These days you can order online to get the sale price.

I’m sure there are people who think it got its name from the day all the dark-skinned people show up at Wal-Mart at 4 AM to get the best deals.
I doubt that is the case however.

The second post answers the question. It is all because of the bean counters and the way accountants talk. Red ink or black ink.

According to the "History Guy" the first use of the term "Black Friday" occurred in an industrial journal published in 1951 and was referring to the trend of a large number of employees calling in sick that day in order to go shopping. It was not until the 1980 when retailers started spreading the friendlier story of the red ink to black ink.
He mentions it in the fists part of this video.

Today I learned that "Cyber Monday" came about in the early 90's. People would shop in stores the weekend after Thanksgiving and wait until Monday to shop online at work where there was high speed internet as opposed to the slow dial up most had at home.

It's all lame. Black "Friday" sales starting hitting my email on Tuesday and cyber "Monday" is basically an extension of that. Nothing I've been shopping for is on sale. I believe the majority is people buying stuff they don't need with money they don't have... In many cases it's stores adding a little more discount to the stuff already on clearance.... On the bright side, looks like I can go to Costco today and get some money back on some of the stuff I bought a couple of weeks ago :--)

The whole idea of naming shopping days has always amused me. Even more amusing are the people who queue up for hours waiting for a store to open at midnight so they can trample one another to save $10 on a TV. Maybe I am simple (a fact) but I really do not get making this an "event".

Black Friday should be called "Trample other customers to get the last TV on sale " day.
Cyber Monday should be called "Max out all credit cards" day.
