Did something stupid today
So I am working on the elevated deck on the back of our house . Basically remove old deck boards and replace with new . To save some steps I park my truck near the deck and throw the old boards in . Been doing that for over a month now with no issues .
So today I am continuing the work but on one " throw " it became the perfect storm . The board landed ........... bounced ......... rotated so the one nail was aimed perfectly at the rear glass . Yep it shattered the rear window 😫 what a stupid move on my part 😡 Oh well it is what it is I guess I may learn how to install a rear window ! |
Got to the third sentence and knew the ending without having to read it. Ah well, it happens.
|
Once had a truckload of steel shelving, angled to the rear somewhat. Hit the brakes, same issue, crap.
|
BTDT,
Loading firewood into the back of my truck, a little careless and boom... log thought the rear window. Can't top my brother though.. He was loading his snowmobile onto his trailer, and drove it off the trailer, into the back of his Explorer . |
Ran a lawnmower handle into the rear glass of my truck once. It happens.
|
Was loading a roll of carpet onto my pick up with my forklift. Didn’t realize that I had pushed the cardboard core out about four feet. Right through the back glass. A couple hundred dollar screw up.
|
Oops! Never lost a back window and that's surprising given my line of work.
I did have to replace the windshield once - came out one morning and had a crack in it. I got Safelite to do the replacement - you may want to check them out for a quote, Rick. |
Doesn’t seem so stupid to me. I would do the same as you. You just got some bad luck.
|
Found a new replacement glass on fleabay for $86.00 with free shipping . My truck has a simple glued in back glass with no defrost or slider . One tube of glass urethane adhesive and I should be good to go. I have never done glass but have seen it done , might be time to learn .
|
It was stupid because part of my work career I was trained in mistake proofing . I have several moving blankets less than 50 ' away . Just one draped over the roof and hanging down over the window would have prevented it . I was mad at myself but over it now .......... nothing is 100 percent except death and taxes 😁
|
Some reason I was expecting to see a picture of a 250 2 stroke! Glad it was only a window. :)
|
Along the lines of broken glass...
Played in a punk band in college. Pushed my azz through a window inadvertently as the stage was very small. It happens. |

A broken window? Ha I had a MCI and tried to get out of the hospital early, you got nuthin"!:D
|
My son used safelite for a window replacement on his E30 a few years ago, now he is dealing with rust due to an improperly sealed windshield.
Lesson learned use a good reputable shop that knows what they are doing, consult some local body shops they know who is good. |
Now if only you had a Cyber truck. :D

I love my headache rack. It was cheaper than the first, and second back glass that I broke

Unless things have changed (which is possible) a new sliding back window is cheap, and they are supposed to be really easy to install (says someone that’s never done it). I think you’re supposed to be able to use string to flip the gasket through and that’s it.

Was once slide-hammered in the Econoline, at a stop sign, by a small refrigerator, on the way to the dump. THEN learned the value of tie-down straps, even when you're in a hurry.
|
I cracked the windshield on my 88 cab that I picked up yesterday. The rear view mirror was all busted and I tried taking it off, then plink! Spider web cracks all over the place. Damned car didn't even have the factory Porsche mirror!
|
You could say "Good shot, I never liked that back window."
We've all done worse. In the naivety of my youth I went out with an incredibly beautiful girl from a phenomenally rich family rich family (Tresidder). I split up with her because I thought there is more to life than money (stupid stupid boy). Maybe a cheap home made perspex plastic type window is a good idea so you can break it again for free. |
A headache rack is on the to do list but not until I install the flat bed. The flat bed is sitting in the man cave waiting it's turn on the rotation of DIY projects . While a rear sliding window might be nice on the rare occasion of opening it I am not sure it's worth the extra money .
|
I was outside doing a painting project, and needed the spray can to warm up a bit (50* and sunny outside). I tossed the can up on the dash of my old 78 F250 wood hauler for a few minutes, but was eveidently too long of time. It blew the windshield out, and sprayed paint all over the headliner...DOH !
|
Just look at it this way....
Today is a new day :)! |
Yep, Loading an ice cream freezer into my Ranger pick up with a high rise cap,I realized if it could go just an inch or so forward, I could close the hatch. One more push and "Crack! " The front corner of the freezer took out the smoked plexiglass window in the front of the cap. Luckily it was cheap.

Neighbor was trying to get snow mobile in back of truck. Just couldn't get it up the ramp. Decided to get speed and fly up the ramp. Well he did. Right through the back window.

This is the one i've been eye balling |
Today I did a search and surprisingly in our little town there are three auto glass companies . Called the first one no answer , called the second one and a friendly guy answered the phone . Gave him the details and he says $190.00 installed . I ask when can you do it he says how about tomorrow morning ?
Didn't even bother calling the third place , so tomorrow morning around 9:30 " the guy " will be at my house to do the voo Doo that he do 😁 |
In a "stupid contest," you'd have to do better than this. Don't believe me? Check YouTube.
|
It's a good day if no one got hurt.

His point, he wasn't ignorant of a means of prevention. Very often your youtube search will show instances of ignorance rather than stupidity. Sometimes the lesson is fatal though. |
I've been thinking about this thread and I'm fairly sure I could start one like this each week. They say "if you're not making mistakes, you're not working hard enough" I don't know how many times I have to stop and ask myself "WTF was I thinking?" and then I realize that I wasn't.

Ok so at 8:30 this morning I get a call from " the guy " and he asks if he can show up early ? I already like this guy . He rolls up at 9:00 and by 10:30 he is completely done including clean up . I asked how long before it can get wet or when can I drive it ? He said right now !
He uses a urethane adhesive that is fully set in 30 minutes , he says because of it he has to work fast but he gets no call backs for leakers . With longer dry time adhesives he said sometimes if you slam a door too soon it can make the glass move and leak . Made sense to me . Anyway this is now behind me and I can get back to the deck . |
