a 500,000 miles car

1958 Speedster on bring a trailer. Probably has been to more PCA Parades than any other car. Always driven there. I remember chatting with Mike at the 1971 Sun
Valley Parade. Nice guy...

I met Mike just a couple of years ago at my buddy, Dave's house. I was junior to everybody at the luncheon by at least 40 years, but it was a great afternoon. Dave ran the 1956 Alpine Rallye in a 356 he picked up at the factory. His story has been in the 356 registry.

Mike and Dave are both in the photo below. Dave has the red flannel. Mike is sitting at the head of the table. He did bring photos of his 904 that he once owned. Lots of history at this lunch. Notice what the fruit bowl is...

Oh God! I knew Mike well from Registry and local events, but I lost track of him over the years. I did not even know he had passed away.
He was a 356 transmission wizard (and told me the 519 in my Speedster would never not “crunch” into 2nd).
Mike was the sweetest guy, always so quiet, but full of information if you had a question. The last time I saw him he was in my garage picking up some transmission parts, I’m guessing about 10 years ago.
That car is special because of Mike. I hope the new owner appreciates it and honors him.

Nice car; looks like a lot of people are already very interested in owning this.

When I first saw the pix in BaT, I was thinking it was too bad that the original Rudge wheels were replaced with alloys, but then I saw the picture with the Rudges, and I decided that the owner made the right choice.

Mike was a regular at the War Bonnet Tech sessions. I chatted with many times here in Oklahoma and and at various Parades.

I recall watching the program "Legends of Motorsport" on the old Speedvision network - it featured the 1956 Alpine Rally called "Ladies First". There were some brief scenes of two Americans in a blue 356. Same guys..?

I should check Youtube.

yep...that was Dave and Chuck. They picked the car up at the factory...and were basically dismissed by the Porsche factory as naïve privateers with no chance of finishing...and then went on to place 3rd. In 1955, they were the outright winners of the Great American Mountain Rally, in a '55 Speedster.

Sorry for the quasi-hijack....but too cool, not to share. He still has his number plate on his garage wall.

Really interesting car and story. Porsches attract some wonderful folks amid the chain-wearing.

Wonder why someone gave this thread one star?

Final Bid $202,000. Reserve not met. Unrealistic seller? Or?
