My 2020 road trip in July
I am already planning my trip to Palm Springs, CA this summer for the PCA Porsche Parade. I live in Oklahoma City, OK and it is a 1,300 mile journey I will undertake the journey in my 1985 911. I have been to California three times before in my 911 and I have seen enough of I-40. I have been listening to the advice of Paul, AKA Seahawk, and he assures me that the southern route on highway 60 is a great road.
So my preliminary plans are to do the obligatory I-40 to Amarillo, TX and that is 273 miles and then turn south onto H-60 and head south west to Clovis, NM and continue on to Socorro, NM and spend the night. That is 628 miles and a perfect ½ way point for me. The next morning I want to spend a little time at the Very Large Array and look around a bit. I doubt I will do a full tour due to lack of time. So after the VLA, on to Show Low, and that is where I really need some further guidance. I prefer some curvy driving roads, and just looking at the maps, it looks like the road to Camp Verde, and then to Prescott is a little curvy. How bad will it be getting through Prescott? From Prescott, AZ and then on to Palm Springs, CA is a 664 mile day. My real question is if there is a better or more fun route to get from Camp Verde, AZ to Palm Springs? Anyone have a recommendation of a motel or bad and breakfast in the Socorro, NM area? Any good places to stop for lunch? I would love to meet up with any Pelicans along the way. It will for sure be another test of the air conditioning in my 911 for July in the southwest part of American. I expect the temps to be 120 or so in Palm Springs. I sure hope they have a parking garage to park my car in for some shade. One side trip I want to make is to get to the International Friendship park at the Mexican border and the Pacific ocean. The furthest southwest point in the USA one can drive to. There are no markers, like the one I drove past in Key West last year, but I just have to go there if the board thinks it is a safe place to go. I am hoping to get some other Parade goers to caravan with me. So last question, how safe is the park during the day? I just want to get a picture of my 911 there, to go with the one in Key West, and the one in Maine. I will determine the best day to cut out of Parade, and go to the park. Any Pelicans that want to go to the park and meet up with me would be great. I only have 6 months to plan this.

Hey glen, sorry for such a late reply.
As I said in my email, I think this is likely the best route through AZ. The road from Showlow to globe is amazing, and then from globe on in to Phoenix is awesome too, but then you end up stuck right in town with no option but I10 the rest of the way. Taking the northern route will be fun and keep you out of the heat for as long as possible. Show low to payson is a nice 4 lane, and then you get into some really fun 2 lanes with lots of twists. Prescott is super easy to get through, a few stop lights but it’s easy to navigate. ![]() |
