We Lost one of the Great Ones Yesterday
Junior Johnson, one of my childhood heroes. One of the personalities that shaped the early days of NASCAR, and a man of the kind that is sorely missing in modern day NASCAR. RIP, Junior.

There are templates in life that will determine our perception of a thing.
The lead-footed chicken farmer definitely helped shape how NASCAR would look like to the rest of the world. (I always wondered if he secretly thought that guys like Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough were ruining the sport, hah hah!) RIP to "The Last American Hero".

Pardoned by President Reagan too, I believe.

When arriving at the Pearly Gates, he handed St. Peter a quart Mason jar of clear liquid with a single peach in it. RIP...

It was guys like Junior who "made" NASCAR for kids like me in the '60's and '70's. They gave it such a regional flavor, and such a personal interest that is all but gone today. Even Richard Petty was, comparatively, a relative pussy. His mom made him promise early on that he would never accept alcohol or tobacco sponsorship. Hell, Junior's mom probably taught him how to run the still...
