I'm seems that Ghosn was playing fast and loose with the law
That said the treatment he received by the Japanese legal system was way beyond the pale

Enjoyed the read, thank you, Seahawk. Nissan hasn't built a good car in quite sometime. Ask the parts counter personnel if you think I'm wrong.

Our 2013 Rogue had issues with the hills in Kansas. Was overheating in 80* ambient temps and went to limp home mode. I can understand in the mountains, but Kansas? It has rattled since new and they couldn't fix it. Seats are so bad the first road trip we took with it we bought pillows to sit on. It has a CVT but gets much worse mileage than the Pacifica we rented (2000 miles on that trip) and the Pacifica had over 100hp advantage and a whole lot more room. BT integration is horrible to not usable. It is probably the worst $136 we ever spent and certainly not worth it. It was given to us by my MiL for our daughter to go to school, but she drives the 2000 Durango instead because she likes it much better. Though it gets far worse mileage of all our vehicles.
So yeah, I would not buy a newer Nissan product. Not even Godzilla. Now an old R32-33-34 on the other hand...or an older 240z/260Z car.

One the one hand Ghosn is probably not innocent...
On the other, the japanese judicial system is all kinds of F-ed up, you are presumed guilty to begin with. So I actually don't blame him. I have direct experience with this craziness, my best friend married a japanese girl and when they divorced 10y alter she fled with their kid. He has ZERO recourse in japan, no sharing, no visitation, nothing... Japan has no treaty with any other country when it comes to this... There's thousands of "kidnapped" kids there of mixed parentage (from europe, US, you name it)... If they do that for divorces, imagine a high profile case like Ghosn's. Again he's probably not innocent but he was gonna get ramroded in Japan for sure. |

None of us know if he is innocent or guilty. But he was potentially facing an unknown number of years of confinement even before his trial was to start, was barely allowed to speak with his wife and the same guy who accused him was himself accused of malfeasance and forced to resign.
FWIW I think this should have been settled in the boardroom- even if a Nissan boardroom is clearly a cesspool full of backstabbers who can't agree on anything let alone run a corporation. At least he can now tell his side of the story. |

Ghosn turned that company around in the 2000's. Nissan resented the control via Renault, that's very well understood in the industry. They wanted this leverage to break up the alliance.
Everything I read / heard - seems to indicate this guy was railroaded. Beside WSJ - see Wards Auto, Autoline Detroit, Automotive News....

Any honest person would agree - Statistics show almost no-one (Ghosn or otherwise) would have a chance of a fair trial in Japan.. 99.4% conviction rate isn't rhetoric..
