I like the 'like' button.

Maybe I've missed it until today and it's been around for a while, but I like the 'like' button.

I've seen it used on other forums but not on Pelican. When was it turned on?

GH85Carrera 01-08-2020 10:47 AM

I first noticed it today. I think it is as useless as the star ratings for threads. I will continue to mostly ignore it. Maybe if someone posts a reply that I expresses my thoughts precisely I may use the like button. I don't think I have star rated more than a handful of threads.

KFC911 01-08-2020 10:53 AM

I gave myself 5 starz once....on a thread I started about how stooooopid the starz were.

I don't see any of that crap on mobile tho'....

Like :D

71T Targa 01-08-2020 10:54 AM

I just need the affirmation that someone, anyone, liked my post.

Just noticed that you get notified when someone likes your post.

I don't like the 'like' button quite as much any more.

notifications can probably be turned off

URY914 01-08-2020 11:25 AM

Can we get a thumbs down button?

KFC911 01-08-2020 01:35 PM

I just went to desktop mode....and now see who "likes" a post....but I don't see the "like" button. Oh well...I guess I can't do what must be the stooopidest thing I've ever seen....worse than freakin' starz I tell ya!

Carry on girlz....

Mebbe we need a "rike" button too :D

The "like" link only shows up when your cursor/pointer is over a particular post. If you've got your mouse positioned so it's not on a post, then you can't see the "like" link.
You can't see where my pointer was in the screen shot below, but it was over your post, not URY914's post.

KFC911 01-08-2020 01:47 PM

LOL....so I can't "like" a post on a phone....

LOVE it :)

I think a middle finger button would be more fun!

Geronimo '74 01-08-2020 03:04 PM

I’m not a fan of “like buttons”
I just don’t see the added value. And the annotations at the bottom of every liked post are just plain stupid.
Millenials are taking over.

If you like a post of mine, peachy, but I don’t crave affirmation.

I vote for a likexit of the kissass function.

(Sorry, it’s late and I am finishing my Talisker Distiller’s edition before I go to bed.)

crustychief 01-08-2020 03:20 PM

Wayne tried the like function a couple of years ago. IIRC it lasted less than a week.

Eric at Pelican Parts 01-08-2020 03:22 PM

I'm not a fan of it. I have adblock plus on and it blocks the buttons... but when I hover on a post, I still see the hyperlinked word "Like" on the right of the post. Argh!

I liked your comment because I'm able to read the real meaning of comments and know that it's what you really wanted. :D

stevej37 01-08-2020 03:43 PM

The best will be seeing who likes their own posts!

edit: just tried it....doesn't work

I figured it was a matter of time before someone would like my post.

Lol, pretty funny, my kind of humor :D thanks for the chuckle :D

Now quit it!

That's the only reason I went to desktop mode earlier :D

MBAtarga 01-08-2020 06:54 PM

Why doesn't the Like icon show up on the left side of the post box instead of the far right side? Lousy design....

Technical question:
The "like button" is a Facebook trademark, but there is no FaceBook javascript shown in my Firefox NoScript menu.

Only Pelican Parts, gstatic, and google-analytics javascript is shown.
(PP is set as trusted)

Rt-clicking and then 'inspect elements' on the Like button does not show any internal Facebook dot com links either.

So my question is whether the Pelican Forums are hosted through Facebook servers or software?
(Somehow these likes must be returning to home base.)

stevej37 01-09-2020 01:49 PM

doubt it. ^^^

Hi John - it's just a vbulletin plugin that isn't tracked / tied / associated to Facebook in any way.

But I associate it with Facebook. Just as lame here as it is there....but I don't go there :D

john70t 01-09-2020 02:17 PM

Thx, Good to know. I don't use FB personally but it works for other people.

At my previous dentist I was a bit surprised to discover x-rays were not available because they were stored on an Amazon server, which was down that day.
The world is changing so much.

We see it as a positive, esp for the individuals in the Classified section in my opinion.

Imagine that you're selling a part and someone 'likes' the post - chances are they may have an interest in purchasing; allowing you to reach out to them directly and get a deal done.

Just an idea.

Is there a way to like the star ratings for threads?

Why not send a PM or a reply in the for sale thread to let the seller know you are genuinely interested?

Hitting the like button and expecting to be contacted by the seller seems like a lazy and impolite way to shop for an item.

That would not work for me as a seller.

YMMV

I suppose it could happen that way...in theory :D

Once you "like" a post....can ya change your mind once you realize it wasn't worthy of juvenile validation?

Somebody please give me some starz ;)

I think Leakyseals is a big ol' poopiehead....is there anyone else like me :D?

I'm starting to like the possibilities now...LOL!

LEAKYSEALS951 01-10-2020 04:02 AM

hehehehehe.....:D

LEAKYSEALS951 01-10-2020 04:18 AM

In my day, we only had stars- and we liked it.

I just noticed the Like button has vanished.

Now if we could only get rid of the silly star ratings.

KFC911 01-15-2020 09:40 AM

LOL....I'd "like" to give Glen 5 starz now :D
