Used car for sale “manual transmission”

Have we already discussed all the used car sites that list manually shiftable automatic transmissions as “manual” ?

Is this a situation where the sellers don’t know the difference or where the sellers are trying to somehow dupe the potential buyers into looking at the ad? I can almost forgive the point if the ad is for a ***** box dd where being able to manually shift your minivan is somehow a perk. But for a sporting car that was legitimately available with both a true manual and either a dct or tc auto.....why would you ever list the dct or tc as a “manual” just because it had paddles? Are sellers and buyers of these cars really that uninformed of what was available?

Try shopping for a 911, M3, Aston....it’s strange to use the transmission filter and not filter out the two pedal cars.

I'm sure most of it is people who don't know what a real manual is.

On Top Gear America a few years ago, Haley Joel Osment (the "I see dead people kid", now an adult) insisted that he could drive a manual. He did most of a lap in first gear until he blew the engine.

And yes, I have too gone to look at a car and walked away the second I realized it wasn't really a manual. Without exception, the seller has been 30 or under.

You have to manually shift it into "D" thus it's a manual.

Someday they will get rid of that gear nonsense.
Add a loop to the go-pedal and pull the foot up for reverse.

And eventually it will become motion-sensor controlled.
Virtual pedal.
(not for use in mosquito areas)

Its also seems very hard for non car people to understand (or care about) DCT type auto and a torque converter auto. As long as it has flappy paddles for them to not use, they seem happy.

My wife only wants a 5, or 6 speed manual in her car (Jeep Liberty)....becoming really difficult to find decent used cars that have this. I drive hers with no problems, but have opted for auto trans in my Mustang GT.

I don't understand people who don't appreciate a good or great DCT. While not all have been good or great, some are and have been terrific and will likely only improve-- just as manuals have improved over the years.

My 18 year old grandson has an old Miata with manual transmission. His mom (my daughter) told him that was the anti-theft device...most people don't know how to drive it!

I am not surprised if people don't know the difference between a manual transmission and an automatic or don't differentiate in their ad. After all, some don't seem to know what engine their car has or which end of the car it occupies, or which wheels are driven.
With some they weren't even bothered to look at the name badge to get the proper spelling.
Although if one really did come across a front wheel drive Maita, it would be unique.

Hey, even the old 2004R transmission in my 86 El Camino CAN be shifted manually. Start in low, shift up one gear at a time. The only "shift" that can't be done manually is the full lock up of the converter that happens at 55 MPH under normal load and throttle application. No way anyone with brains would call it a manual transmission.

Funny story! Needed a winter beater and old ALFA's are hard to come by today. So my buddy Jeff called me on a whim and said I've been trying to sell my Fathers(83 years old) car and can't sell it.
OK Jeff I'll take a look at it, it wasn't an ALFA, it was a Hyundai Sonata 2009. Went to look at her and realized why he couldn't sell her. It's a 5 SPEED! That's why he couldn't sell it. I'll take it! Didn't even test drive it. He the best ALFA mechanic ever. Work on my Montreal on down. He went through the entire car and it runs great, but most of all it has heat. Been driving ALFA beaters for over 25 years.

A Model-T had 2 forward gears.
A Porsche 930 had 4.
Geeze that should be enough.

OMG how much could any driver want more out of a transmission?

My DW had (still has, but blown head gasket at 258,000 miles) a 2003 BMW 325 CI convertible with a 5 speed....here is a car that truly needs a 6th gear, 70 mph is 3000 rpm.

Back in the mid 1990s when I was looking for a 911 to buy, I saw a car ad for a 911 SC that the copy writer said had power steering, bower brakes, climate control, and a V8. I did not bother to go look.
