Such comments were kept to one's self not long ago, I'm sure you can figure out what's changed in the last few years.

Yes it is wrong.

I will also throw in a little snark and say maybe they are running out of Presidents. Lots of Presidents are unmemorable (Tyler, Arthur, Harrison, etc - wait, who? Exactly), not well regarded by history (Nixon, Coolidge, Hoover, etc), too recent (Obama, Clinton, Bush the Jr).

Here is a little more snark. Maybe the someone at the Navy is thinking "no way I'm gonna name a carrier after Trump" and someone else was thinking "no way I'm gonna name a carrier after Obama" so they agreed "let's get off this President thing before we get there".

And here is the cynic in me. The Navy looks ahead, sees that in 2030 the Federal budget deficit may be $5TR and the only military threats anyone can talk about are Chinese and N Korean ballistic missiles, Russian cyber bombs, and that folks will be wondering "what does a carrier do against missiles and cyber attacks and do we need to spend $$$ on another one". Someone in the Navy thought "hmm, the USS Dorie Miller is gonna be harder to cancel than the USS Generic President".

You know what, your cynicism knows no bounds. I love this answer a lot. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Back in the day, stupid ideas were kept to one's self too. You've kept your tradition of bucking the convention alive.

Seahawk 01-22-2020 12:58 PM

Here are the naming conventions: https://military.wikia.org/wiki/United_States_ship_naming_conventions

Had to be a process, right?

My opinion?

While I served on small ships, I'd be proud to serve on the USS "Dorie" Miller.

The Military is going retro in their naming conventions.
Lots of WW2 folks like Sgt. John Basilone USMC are getting a ship named after them, The A.F. just did up a F-15 in WW2 livery to honor a B-17 side gunner too.

Its called leadership in my book.

The carrier and the submarines both have a real affect on missile launches from countries hostile to the USA. The are armed with lots of deadly retaliatory weapons. One carrier could pretty much lay waste to North Korea if he was nuts enough to actually attack the greatest armed force on the planet. The old MADD thing seems to have kept Russia in check.

But isn't that the issue - the ship in the middle is not small. It's more of a moving piece of U.S. sovereignty.

Anyway, we might as well start selling advertising space on the side of Air Force One. Shoot, maybe change the Presidential Seal to be more "inclusive". I'm sure there are racist overtones in there somewhere.

That’s interesting and arcane - love it!

This topic could slide into a related one that I’m very interested in, which is how useful and survivable will aircraft carriers actually be in the next 30 years.

You can bet that the current guy(?) in charge would love nothing more than to advertise himself on the side of that aircraft (complete with a yuuuuuuggggeee head-shot and some of his lie-riddled, self-quotes). :)

Rawnch... Take it to PARF!

I can't - I'm still not allowed in there, bro!

^ Haha, no doubt. One of them at least. But the Sec Def was on board with the idea from the get go. Good idea, bad execution.

Maybe a better question is whether the nature of air power will put emphasis on pilotless craft or whatever.

I'm a plankowner of Battleship USS Wisconsin.
I served on Destroyer USS Waddell for it's decommissioning.
Served onboard Carrier USS Nimitz for Desert Storm, and during that campaign I was on Aegis Cruiser USS Chancellorsville for a short stint.

I've experienced countless training and action on all those ships. Oh, that includes waaaay more random shipboard fires at sea than I care to think about. Life on a ship at sea is simply incredible.
Let's see, that's a battleship, a destroyer, a carrier, and a cruiser. I was very fortunate to see, and train, on that many types firsthand.
And not once, not even for a second, did the name of the vessel enter my thoughts in the way Russ postulates.

I agree with Paul, 100%

I respect everyone's right to speak and have opinions, but Russ is off base on this one.

I'm not joking one bit, Russ...I saw your post about grieving with the police officer.
Are you doing ok? Your words in this thread seem kinda rough, my friend.

Not the first naval vessel named after him.....

Thanks, I was also going to mention that.... there was a destroyer named after Doris Miller when I was a kid.... it's long since been decommissioned.

GH85Carrera 01-30-2020 08:18 AM

A boy named Doris would have made a catchy song......

I bet he had a hard time in high school with a name like Doris if his classmates were typical of the kids when I was in high school.
