Aircraft carrier to be named after Pearl Harbor hero

As carriers as of late have been named after US presidents, the next few presidents that could have been named would have stirred a lot of controversy (not trying to PARF this) no matter which way you lean.

There were many heroes on Dec. 7th 1941. As I remember without Googling it, there were 6 Medal of Honor recipients that day. Only three lived to get them. And on died a few month later in combat.

It sure makes sense to name ships after heroes and not Presidents and politicians. Of course presidents and politicians are where the money comes from for the military.

This is good stuff. I remember watching Tora! Tora! Tora! as a kid, and the part where he is portrayed was one of the only "bright spots" in the movie. Ever since then I've had a real soft spot for him and his story. It's good to see him honored like this.

Watched Tora! Tora! Tora! this past weekend on TCM. Incredible movie!

Nimitz pinned the Navy Cross on him. Fleet Admiral of the US Navy.

I think this is pretty sweet.

Please delve deeper, Nimitz didn't want to do it, he was ordered to.

Speaking of Miller, Nimitz remarked: "This marks the first time in this conflict that such high tribute has been made in the Pacific Fleet to a member of his race and I'm sure that the future will see others similarly honored for brave acts."

I am happy about this.

Not just because Miller was black. Although that's a big deal.

But because at least one aircraft carrier should be named to honor the common sailor, the lowly seaman, who fought and died for our country. In the Navy of 1941, there wasn't any sailor more lowly than a black sailor.

So we've named this carrier very fittingly, I think.

Well ok, I'll be the assh01e here.

You guys are crazy. An aircraft carrier is the lead force projecting entity in a group of trained and highly skilled heroes who man the ships, aircraft, and weapons that can very well change world history. The reason they name them after Presidents is because a President also writes history. It is probably the most appropriate moniker for an aircraft carrier, that of a U.S. President.

To name a fighting ship after a military hero, as opposed to a civilian or a poet, is a great idea. That gives you a lot of heroic men and woman to choose from. But this action some sort of perverted lowering of the criteria so that I don't know, white guilt or some weird thing can be assuaged. This is affirmative action loaded into a nuclear chain reaction. Now every being in a carrier battle group can charge into death's den being led by a Billy Joe Bob who never led anyone in his frikken life. How is that going to work? He certainly did not have the sheer weight of responsibility of a U.S. President, who makes probably the most weighty decisions every single day of his service. Do you want to know how much of a God Damned Big Deal it is to be a President? OK, try calling one on your little phone. Go over and try to visit one. He runs the entire military. The. Entire. U.S. Military. And 1/3 of the Federal government. You don't see the British naming their aircraft carriers the Her Majesty's Ship "Bryan Budd". Who is Bryan Budd? Exactly.

Well the last prez deserves no such honor so perhaps this was a tactful way of skipping him and avoiding accusations of racism.

Well, plenty of carriers are not named after Presidents. Enterprise (2027), John Stennis (1995), Carl Vinson (1982) are the most recent. No carrier before 1968 was named after a President.

I will also throw in a little snark and say maybe they are running out of Presidents. Lots of Presidents are unmemorable (Tyler, Arthur, Harrison, etc - wait, who? Exactly), not well regarded by history (Nixon, Coolidge, Hoover, etc), too recent (Obama, Clinton, Bush the Jr).

Here is a little more snark. Maybe the someone at the Navy is thinking "no way I'm gonna name a carrier after Trump" and someone else was thinking "no way I'm gonna name a carrier after Obama" so they agreed "let's get off this President thing before we get there".

And here is the cynic in me. The Navy looks ahead, sees that in 2030 the Federal budget deficit may be $5TR and the only military threats anyone can talk about are Chinese and N Korean ballistic missiles, Russian cyber bombs, and that folks will be wondering "what does a carrier do against missiles and cyber attacks and do we need to spend $$$ on another one". Someone in the Navy thought "hmm, the USS Dorie Miller is gonna be harder to cancel than the USS Generic President".
