Wow, the in-car video looks crazy. They were hauling. It could have been a lot worse.
They took a tree down. I guess the tree broke their fall.

Those videos are incredible! Scary stuff.
"The 2020 World Rally Championship has only just begun, there's already been a massive race-ending incident for the Hyundai team of Ott Tänak and co driver Martin Jarveoja." Those Korean drivers are tough little guys.

Those guys have bigger nads than I do to run that fast on curvy roads (navigator or not).

![]() It does seem that things that used to sound fun have gotten so technical and gone so far beyond what we called limits a few years ago that they aren't fun any more. It seems the longer a sport is popular the more extreme measures people take to win - to the point where it's so ridiculous it isn't interesting. How long before a rallye's GPS coordinates are programmed into an on-board computer that tells the driver what to do and when? How long after that does the computer just control the car and the driver and navigator are just passengers?

Rally is still pretty cool compared to other racing because the guy has to try to go as fast as possible while still keeping far enough back from the limit to be able to make changes if he needs to.

Yeah, they have to balance speed and the ability to recover via experience, what they can see and what the instructions are, but you never really know until you've gotten past a section if you had the right balance or not.

Went for a ride in the passengers seat of a rally car here a long time ago now. I think it was the third gen wrx. The scariest thing I have ever done. I vowed to never get in a rally car again. 180kmh down tiny, BIG gum tree lined tracks. They are very skilled at what they do....but they can have it.

When he dropped the right side tires off the tarmac, he was toast.
Here’s a video that shows just how insane these guys are. The fast guys in these clips are knocking on 110 miles an hour through this section. Check out the photographer shooting pictures right next to the tripod containing the speed gun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upmn9TQSIQ8&feature=emb_logo |

So, so lucky as far as fast rally crashes go. Watching your own car and driver/crew crash is never fun, but it was much worse feeling in WRC than F1, I can tell you. There was a lot of work done by the FIA to improve crash safety on the current generation of WRC cars and I think it's working.
Take off around 100mph, over a small clearing with no trees; did I mention lucky? ![]() Three compressions in quick succession leading up to the take-off, supposedly the cars before and after Tanak also had "moments" there. ![]() They fell another 10m or so straight down the rock face before "landing" ![]() They were talking about "water" as they rolled, talk about situational awareness. They would have reached the river in that trajectory had they gone a bit farther. Ott has a bit of experience in that department: I've ridden shotgun in a WRC car, and there is absolutely nothing else like it. Among all professional drivers, I truly believe these guys and gals have the most number of screws loose ![]()

Ok I admit it .
They are nuts, but dang what style. I would love to have that level of car control. Not the ones who crash though. one item on my bucket list is to ride with Lobe. I can image saying "pick a road you know because I am going to be over here screaming like a little school girl.

I have done some co-driving at very basic local rally events. Even so, as soon as the stage starts, the focus is on reading the pace notes and, at least for me, there was no mental capacity left to worry about crashing. I thought my driver had more to lose if we crashed, so it was in his best to not do that
![]() Saying that, apparently when Peugeot Sport tallied up their part sales, they discovered that they sold twice as many bodywork parts on the co-driver side, as they did the driver's side. Hmmmmm. |

I'd agree, but I really don't think I have the nads for it. No...I know I don't have the nads for it. My wife looked at me after and said, "Jesus....are you ok".....I can honestly say, no I wasn't. Mortality check anyone...
