Chinese Hospital for Coronavirus in 6 days

Being built in 6 days....They just started yesterday 1/23.

Construction began on the night of January 23 for a new specialized hospital for coronavirus patients in central China's Wuhan City. The hospital is designed to have an area of 25,000 square meters with 1,000 beds and will be put into use by February 3, officials said.

The special hospital is being built in the Caidian District in the western suburb of the city.

According to officials, the hospital will follow the building model of the Xiaotangshan Hospital. Beijing built the Xiaotangshan Hospital, a temporary medical center, to treat and control Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which had spread rapidly on the Chinese mainland in 2003. The hospital was completed in seven days and admitted one-seventh of the SARS patients in the country within two months, creating a miracle in the history of medicine.

Ouch, please do not send me there. I can only imagine what kind of problems that place will have.

China is trying to show that are doing something OTHER that starting viruses like the Corona virus, SARS, Swine Flu, and so many others. A few dozen million Chinese citizens are upset that they can't travel and enjoy the Chinese New Year.

They will build a facility that will serve their purposes. It won't be what we typically envision as a traditional hospital - and it doesn't have to be.

Also - in that projected 6 days they will have it set up enough to begin operations - but I'm sure every succeeding day they will continue to add more infrastructure and operational features.

Today as I was moving across town on the way to one of my accounts I passed a corner where some "street work" was in progress. Barricades up, etc. This freaking project has been going on now for at least 2 months. It's not some huge project - just an improvement on a street corner. I couldn't help but think how incompetent we can be at some of our infrastructure improvement projects. I don't have any specific details - enough to point a finger - but bottomline is we have these things just languish for months on end.

Good for the Chinese for gettin' it done!

Just now on World News Tonight they quoted the time frame for construction as "10 days".

The problem is that they'll cut all sorts of corners and it'll probably be unsafe.

I'm no expert on geotech issues and construction techniques, but it makes no sense to my why that field is filled with excavators at the beginning of the video. Excavators are good at digging deep holes/trenches and piling the soil up next to the hole/trench. Before construction starts, the overburden needs to be removed so you can place proper backfill, that is then compacted to spec. Where are the loaders and dump trucks? I suspect the video was make to show that China is quickly responding. They would have been better served by building temp structures (big tents) in parking lots or taking over arenas and other large indoor spaces. Building a new hospital is just dumb.

Maybe they hired set designers from the cinema industry to coordinate construction.

Big time. I posted here about a movie, “American Factory” about the Chinese building a factory in Ohio. When the boss came over from China he saw the fire alarm strobe on the wall and wanted it taken down. When he was told it was code to have one he wanted it hidden under a desk!

However, cutting corners is probably warranted given the urgency of getting such a facility up and running. If the goal is saving lives, better to get this potential epidemic under control quickly than to worry about potential future problems.

If they just stopped living with farm animals in filth, then they would not need to keep building hospitals in 6 days.

How many Army tent field hospitals could be deployed and running in the same time I wonder.

Perhaps a stupid question but....in this case, are there no available facilities, vacant or otherwise that could be repurposed far more easily?

Seems extreme to go from dirt to hospital, no?

There are emergency inflatable concrete shelters that can be ready in a day.
