Hiring a smoker

Hiring a second assistant. Just interviewed a potentially good candidate. Smokes. Smells terrible.

Obviously can't ask him to stop but thinking of getting him a uniform that he only wears here.

Any other options?

You will likely find he is out on a "smoke break" a lot when you go looking for him. And you will find a lot of cigarette butts on the ground around your building. Evey smoker I have seen is a terrible litterbug. There might be a few smokers that don't litter their butts, but they are very rare.

I am on a long engineering VTC, the kids are doing great.

The uniform thing won't work...his entire life smells like smoke: just the way it is, from his house to his car to the smoke breaks he will insist on.

The last guy I know who smokes is a friend of mine dying from various maladies, my son's Godfather. When I take him to his appointments, I will not let him smoke in my car, nor will I sit in his house where he smokes. And, he is dying.

Smoking is a signal of difficulty. Find a non-smoker.

Every soft surface, like cardboard and packing materials, is going to smell like smoke. No one is going to want a part for their bazillion dollar Ferrari wrapped up in stuff that smells like cigarette smoke.

If he couldn't make the interview without stinking, he is going to stink every day at work. You will be around it all of the time. You are going to hate it.

Sorry, need to pass on this one.

You don't want to hire a smoker unless there is nobody that can do the job but them or you like the smell of cigarettes.

I'd have to agree that unless this cat is a way better choice I'd keep interviewing. Then there's maybe counseling him. I mean there are so many places that one cannot smoke anymore, work place should not have to be an exception. I know you're a small company but I doubt he'd be able to smoke at a company with more than 50 employees. And if so, only on designated breaks in a designated area. AFA bringing the smell back to his work area is concerned, maybe you need better air circulation.

I'm a non smoker, never smoked and cigarette smells do offend me. But I don't go ape siht over it, I just move away.

I'm really sensitive to smells and I hate the smell of tobacco smoke. But we had two smokers in the office for the last 5 years and I was hardly aware that they smoked. They only smoked outside. They got a 15 minute break in the AM and a 15 minute break in the PM. They were both women so I didn't get too close to them and they may have had better hygiene than a guy, so those may be factors.
But it is possible for a smoker to get along if they try.

In the late '70s and early 80's, I was a supervisor/spare driver for a dairy. All but one of the drivers smoked. The office assistant smoked, My boss had just quit. My wife used to be able to tell which driver I had been with that day by the way my clothes smelled when I came in the door. We did daily laundry.
Oh, the driver who didn't smoke? He had TB at a younger age. He is in his eighties now. At least three of the others, half the group, are in the ground.
When we re-painted the office, we washed the walls and ceilings with TSP to etch the old paint. The water came out coffee coloured with every section of wall. (In Random Pictures thread, there was an image of a ceiling behind glass walls. The ceiling of that room was light brown. That is a smokers' room.)
I am SO glad smoking has been banned from workplaces.

Best

For a non-smoker, someone who smells really strongly of cigarette smoke is right up there with bad BO. Lots of folks don't want to be around either.

I would take BO over smoker's smell. And BO is easier to correct. "Dude, take a shower at least once a month." with a laugh works just fine.

We had two guys that wore cologne or aftershave that smelled stronger than any smoker. They were the first one's to complain if someone else smelled at all of smoke or bad hygene.

There was this one guy that was sent home for a week without pay with a bar of deoderant soap, shampoo, and deoderant. No one could get within 20 ft without being aware of his BO. He had to be sniff tested before he could come back to work. He got rid of his BO in that week, and a month later he really cleaned up his act. Dressed better and kept his hair neater. After 2 months he left to work somewhere else.

Smoking is a bad habit but some people definitely manage it better than others. Not every smoker smells like an ashtray but some do. Maybe it has to do w how much they smoke(?) I dunno.

I quit years ago but even when I smoked, I could smell a car that was an ashtray on wheels. Mine never did, I only smoked w the windows down and I’m ashamed to say that I just flicked the butt when I was done. Never used the ashtray in the vehicle. At one point, late in the game, I switched to Camel straights and felt less guilt about the littering because it was all biodegradable. Still litter, though.

I have this theory that smokers stink worse now because smoking is prohibited everywhere and they are forced to wolf one down on quick breaks, etc. My old man smoked until he was about 60 and it’s the weirdest thing but he always smelled amazing...like a bar of soap and Mennen Skin Bracer.

We had an employee that had a male cat. That cat must have hosed him down and his house. He would come to work, and in short order all the employees would complain about his funk. We sent him home to shower a few times. We finally had to fire him, just too stinky for the civilized indoor world.

It was the only thing we ever found that was worse than a smoker.

My Mom was part of a 9 person nuclear family. All but 3 smoked, and it took my Grandparents, Mom, 2 uncles and an Aunt...all from smoking related illnesses.

The remaining 3 are going strong, they never smoked.

Tough for me to be around it at all.

And yup, you’ll find butts all over. Even if they say they’re careful about it. Mostly because it just doesn’t hit their radar like non smokers.
AMHIK

Sure, there are exceptions, but don’t ask me to quantify. I just see what I see.
