Great story. I would love a road trip in a ‘55 - ‘65 Chrysler.

Took him some balls to do such a road trip in such an old car.

I've done some road trips in my youth, but I wouldn't want to repeat them in the car I used back then, even though it was a '68 1600 BMW.

I did not read much of the article. I have to assume they did not try the trip on bias ply tires.
For a trip with buddies, and time schedules are not part of the trip, it could be fun.

A few years ago we had a tour group from Michigan visit Nova Scotia. They were all driving pre 1917 Ford model Ts. Only one car had needed assistance .
Compared to that, a, 50s car would be stress free. Best Les

a few years ago there was a group of antique cars from Model T era cars to the 1960s all driving Rt-66 the entire route. Rt-66 passes a few miles from my house. We just happen to be out and saw a bunch of cool cars in the group. They had a support van with two mechanics and parts but they all were going just fine.

Yeah, he's a good writer. Cool story.
I did the same but not recently. We took a '58 Buick up the Pacific coast to Marin County and spent some time banging around there and in the City. As I said, this was way back when you could call on a pay phone for a dime. And that's what I had in my pocket arriving back in Long Beach, a dime. In Camarillo we put all of the last money in the gas tank holding back only that dime. It was definitely on 'empty' cruising down the last stretch of freeway towards home using the gas pedal as if it were made of thin glass. We were a bit hungry as well. But big ol' soft bench seats, soft springs and duly worn out shocks provided for a ride like a boat on very calm water. Not too good turning even on the off-ramps and probably bounced like a bobble head going into a gas station over the entry driveway. Seemed like we gained almost space ship weightlessness going over a RR crossing. Glad we didn't need to panic stop at anytime because it needed another county to completely stop. It was a hardtop so all the windows down all the time. Didn't have the money to stop at a motel so we made it from one friend's house to the next in a day with time too spare taking it all in. I say we. It was me and my ex wife about 1969, before we were married. Had we made more trips like that we might have made a marriage work. I always said 2 friends got married and destroyed a friendship. |

I had to do a double take at 1969. Did not realize you were in your 70s! The Buick was still kinda new at that point.

I took several cross country trips in my 1956 Porsche coupe in the 70s and one in the 80s. I did have some problems here and there, but we made it home every time.
Compared to a 20 or 30 year old Porsche, an old Chrysler would be a piece of cake to take across country. I'd do it in a minute.
