Guns Stolen from Cars

Local news story. And unfortunately, it was OBVIOUS what was causing car break-ins leading to stolen firearms.

https://www.click2houston.com/news/investigates/2020/02/15/thousands-of-guns-stolen-in-houston-during-car-burglaries/

The primary issue? Stupid people marking their cars with NRA and other gun stickers.

You are not very smart if you leave anything of value in a car.

If you leave a gun in a car, you are the reason gun ownership needs to be regulated much much more.

I occasionally read a Toyota Tundra forum and there are threads, with pics, about gun mounts for the trucks. Like ARs mounted under the rear seat, little safes in the console and more. Crazy if you ask me.

Generally the reason the gun is left in the vehicle is the person is entering a "gun free zone". Some store that posts the proper no guns signage.

Maybe the problem isn't gun owners leaving guns in the cars but the preponderance of criminals breaking into the cars? Next thing you know the hand wringers will be blaming rape victims for wearing short skirts. Oh wait, I think that's already the situation in Europe.

It's definitely the owner's fault if they leave their keys, (or gun+ammo), in their car. There will always be criminals, isn't carrying a gun everywhere sort of a de facto admission of this??

Wtf else carry a gun around in public, civilian society? Personally, I think it's pretty anti-social behavior to start with but that's just my opinion. We don't have carry permits here, (or technically we do, they are just hard to obtain), but you can still legally carry a gun and ammo in your vehicle. It just needs to be in a locked box or in the trunk, w a few other restrictions. We have gun ranges and it's perfectly legal to transport your guns from one place to another.

The reason I don't carry a gun around and would not even if carry permits were obtainable is because it's a huge responsibility. A PIA, really. It's not like any other inanimate object that you can just forget is in your car or not think about, at least not if you're a decent person. I've had my tennis racquet in my car since I can't remember...I never play these days but it's there. Same w some other random items of value, big deal. A gun is a completely different matter.

The reason there are so many illegal guns in our society is because there are so many legal ones, period. 16 year old gang members do not make their guns in a bathtub, they come from gun shops. They are the most stolen thing on earth and there are so many to steal. Strict laws regarding gun storage in homes and vehicles would be a start.

Yet another way gun free zones have the unintended consequence of increasing gun crime.

Clearly we need more gun free zones.

How times have changed. In the small N. TX farming community I grew up in during the 1950's / 60's virtually every pickup truck had what came to be known as "Easy Rider Rifle Racks" installed right behind the seat across the rear window (no extended cab pickups in those days). And they usually all had a .22 rifle or shotgun (or both) sitting in the rack in plain sight. These were not for personal protection, they were for rattle snakes, jack rabbits, etc.
You would see these trucks parked downtown and around town and often not even locked while the drivers were in the feed / grocery stores or wherever.. in the summer the windows might not even be rolled up. Not sure when that practice ended but you certainly don't see it today.

What is the bigger picture?

The Left has got everyone to thinking if you have a firearm on yourself or with you, that you have to be a very bad person.
For whatever reason, you are traveling with your firearm but dont dare take it out of the car with you as it will cause mass panic.!
Plain and simple.
A person has to go get gas, bathroom, eat etc.
Do they not?
So they take the path of less resistance.
Keep voting gun haters into office.......facts are facts.

That applies to guns also...and probably to a lot of other things in life. And leaving a loaded gun where anyone can easily break in and grab it is not being very 'situationally aware'.

Really, if you are going to carry, you need a gun safe in your trunk or something.

Frankly I am dubious about even applying for a license to carry here, don't want to be on that list with the crew running this place.

Never advertise that you're likely to have a gun (like with a sticker on your car or a sign in your front yard that says "nothing in this house worth dying for"

You may think it's cute or you're advertising to the sheeple that everyone should have a gun, but it's just silly and advertising to the bad guys where they can get a gun.

Also, never have a gun that just stays perpetually in your console, glove box, etc....

licenses? You do in most places in the US need some sort of license to carry a concealed weapon on your person, but in Texas you don't need any sort of license to have a gun in your house or your car.

The problem with having it in your trunk is that you've got to get it from your place of concealment into your trunk while likely standing in the open in a parking lot without being seen. Even if it's legal for you to put it into your trunk while standing in the open, that has the effect of potentially being seen which means the car or trunk is a target.

There are a bunch of small gun safes that are designed to fit under a car seat, carry one or two handguns and come with a steel cable so they can be cabled to the seat frame. If you're going to have to occasionally leave your gun in your car, I would think you'd want to be able to do that inside the car where you've got no or a very low chance of being seen.
