How did he know that he needed someone to explain trailers to him?

Yep, just like the Alfa Giulietta & Giulia spiders that I could get for $100-$200, and did.

Very smart. Have you ever tried delivering newspapers from a car with a hard top? The houses on the right can be a bear.

He was making $32k a year in 1978, or the early 1980s.
That's like earning $85,000 today.
This was was a truck driver, not a delivery boy

That mental picture made me laugh out loud - whipping a wrapped up newspaper out the right side of his TR. Like, with a wrist snap for more distance.

That dude was making coin at $32.5k. In '78 I was a machinist for GM and worked massive OT and pulled down $20k. Was a really good job. When I left college in 83 started at a Big 8 accounting firm making $17.5k.

One of my doctor friends bought the third Ferrari Daytona even made. It was a European car and not really quite legal but he was living in Alabama at the time, and they had no titles or inspections, just a bill of sale and it was tagged. He bought it used when it was "just a used car" and paid 17 grand for it, in perfect running condition.

I remember being stunned at the price when he said he took it for a tuneup at the Atlanta dealership and new plugs (24 of them) and two oil filters, and two distributors and so on.

His wife was not happy that he just paid 17 large for a used car. His big blunder was he told his wife he would never own a car that cost more than the house. When the prices started to skyrocket, he had to keep moving into bigger and bigger houses to outpace the Daytona. I know he sold it a few years ago, but he did not tell me for how much as that is rather private info. It was his 401K investment for sure.
