Cowboy of the year.
I got an email from the sister of a guy I met in basic training at Ft. Ord in '64. We were the trainee Sergeants for our platoon. He ended up becoming a lone cowboy and living the full lifestyle. His sister says he was designated the national "Cowboy of the Year." You never know what path people will take in life. Here's the picture of him.

There has to be more, Marv, and I'd like to hear it. I worked with a lot of Cowboys in California in the late 60's...we actually had a cow shoot in our ring that I would work.
His skin is proof that weather and sun are not our friends.

Sorry I don't know any more. She only emailed me a few pictures, one being on a page of the magazine below. Last time I talked to him was in the late '70s when he was working as a packer in the eastern Sierras. Many years later he moved to eastern Washington. He definitely looks different from his early 20s.

1960s is a little late for real cowboying - how old was he then?
mostly cattle were driven to the nearest railhead - the long drives were from S. Texas to Kansas & after the rails spread it was mostly day work to a railhead and now to a big semi parked as close as possible |
