What to do..what to do..stray cats taking over the dang neighborhood!

About 6-8 months ago, we had maybe 1-2 stray cats running around the neighborhood, fast forward to last night I counted 8...yes 8 running across my front yard and driveway. One of the (larger) cats found its way into my detached driveway last night when the door was up and got trapped in there overnight. I woke up this morning to find it had knocked a bunch of boxes onto my wife's new car scratching it badly...I was not impressed plus I get to clean the floor today as it decided that my garage floor and one of the other cars was its bathroom. This is the second time this has happened and my wick is burning low...very low.

The problem is compounded by the fact that my retired neighbors think they are cute and feed them. As I do not own a dog, the cats do not feel threatened on my property. I called the city and they were no help. I am -><- close to talking to my neighbors knowing that it will be tense, as it seems as I only talk to them when there is an issue.

Thoughts?

If the neighbors are feeding and the cats have some level of trust with them you should enlist their help to trap and neuter or the problem just gets worse.

You need a crazy cat rescue lady. They are out there. I have a now 10 year old cat from a feral colony on my ex father in laws back deck. He finally got a hold of a lady who ran a trap and spay/neuter operation out of her house.

You and I think alike.

My wife and I thought about traps and relocating them, but we would have to buy or rent the traps and then borrow a truck as our cars are too small....talk about inconvenient...who has time for that.

I had a buddy who picked up an old farm house with a barn that sat empty for a few years. Barn was full of feral cats. Called the humane society and they came to trap them at $5 each. They caught 85 of them! they quit charging them after about 25.

The traps are under $25.00. I can fit two of them in my cars trunk. They have come in handy for pesky coons at other times also .
It was kind of fun, I was the cat whisperer for a few weeks . Here kitty kitty .
The last 2 were smart and avoided the cages for a week or better .

We had a problem with feral cats in the neighborhood where I used to live. They would kill all the birds in the area, and piss on everything to mark it. My neighbor and I had enough. He was an active duty cop. We would each set up traps, and each morning he would load the cats up in his cruiser, and take them to the animal shelter. I know we got more than 20. We likely got a few cats that were not feral but the owners let roam at night. They kill just as many song birds and leave presents in my rose beds. The city would call if the cats had any ID so those when back home. Once we trapped out the feral cats, the birds finally returned, and nature was back to normal. Cats are the worst things ever for the native wildlife in an area.

Excellent point, many of the birds in my neighborhood are now gone and I have lost count as to how many bird carcasses I have cleaned up all over my property (incl. by the front door) over the past 8 months. Thanks for chiming in.

talking to your neighbors will not go well unless its to catch and neuter.

when all the military left the base when it closed they left behind an exuberant number of pets.
you would see large packs of cats and dogs, no not together.
they eventually thinned out.

you could set a trap in your back yard to catch them and take them to a shelter.
still, I would not let your neighbors know

We had a problem at a house we used to own. Trapped them in a Hav-a-hart trap and took them to humane society to be spayed neutered at no cost. Problem solved.

Thanks, dump them on us, like everything else you don’t want. Mattresses, sofas, old tires - just throw them out on some back road and let the farmers take care of them.
