I posted a Coronavirus joke
On Facebook, shared an article that explained the **** show that the medical system would become once this thing gets rolling.
The joke was "This kinda makes me wanna go get it now while the gettin is good." My step sister just left a comment, "Worth thinking about...." She has a PHD in infectious diseases and works for the CDC. Not comforting.

Why was the swine flu in 2012 that both infected and killed many, many, many more (like a couple of orders of magnitude more) US citizens not a crisis, but this is?
Why was nothing cancelled in 2012 but our whole country is on lockdown now?

The lockdown is to contain the spread so that this does not infect and kill many, many, many more (like a couple of orders of magnitude more) US citizens. Not a difficult concept to grasp

Eat a lot of food now. Try to put on weight so that when you lose 20-30 pounds in 2 weeks, it doesn't kill you.

the virus is inactivated by heat but can persist on surfaces
that means you should avoid rabbit food and eat cooked meats... |

Internet and social media is way more prevalent, available to and used by way more people (in the US and worldwide) than in 2012.

H1N1 was a crisis that was handled well, so it didn’t look like a crisis. H1N1 killed approx 12000 people over the course of a year. We don’t know what COVID-19 is going to look like a year from now, so it’s hard to compare them. One reason there was little panic is that Obama immediately recognized H1N1 was a serious health issue as opposed to a political plot and took it seriously. He didn’t have a bunch of people denying it and minimizing it and didn’t have a “hunch” it was going to go away very soon. He declared a public health emergency within a couple of days of the first case being identified and continued to stay on top of it. He declared a second public health emergency a few weeks later finally a national emergency. Few people panicked because it appeared the government knew what it was doing to protect us.

FWIW
In late January, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex M. Azar II declared a public health emergency for the entire United States to aid the nation’s healthcare community in responding to 2019 novel coronavirus. “While this virus poses a serious public health threat, the risk to the American public remains low at this time, and we are working to keep this risk low,” Secretary Azar said. “We are committed to protecting the health and safety of all Americans, and this public health emergency declaration is the latest in the series of steps the Trump Administration has taken to protect our country.” Then declared a National emergency yesterday I believe. Also restricted travel to and from China early on. Got hammered pretty good for that move. Now being credited with preventing the spread earlier. The allegation that this hasn't been taken seriously is more of a political talking point than a reality.

The president said Corona Virus would someday disappear, like a miracle (so no need to worry) The president contradicted public health experts - who stated the gravity of the issue based on science - by saying he had a "hunch" their statistics were wrong. On the same day Larry Kudlow, who is on the Corona Virus task force, said the outbreak had been contained, the Surgeon General said it had not been contained and we were moving to mitigation efforts. The president said "anyone who wants a test can get one" while the CDC says only very limited numbers of test kits are available. The president said we are very close to having a vaccine, when the experts say it will be a year or a year and a half before we have a vaccine. And the best one: The president said people who have the virus are walking around, even going to work. If you want to spread panic, let the president of the United States tell the country that the people working next to you every day may be carrying a deadly and highly contagious disease.

CDC and WHO have both said a virus like this tends to diminish in severity as people get outside more and are exposed to UV which tends to kill a virus
His "hunch" was regarding the mortality rate. Many experts have argued the mortality rate will improve as more cases appear and more people survive. Kudlow said "relative to population" which could be argued. We have 350,000,000 people in this country and 1700 known cases so far. In the same speech the President corrected himself and said "anyone who needs" Inovio and Moderna both have vaccines that will be entering the human testing phase with Inovio beginning testing in April. It's estimated that Inovio's vaccine will reach the public by the end of the year due to FDA fast tracking. And lastly: People ARE walking around and going to work with the virus because they don't know they have it because it takes so long for symptoms to appear and you're contagious for something like 9 days before symptoms appear. If you don't know the person standing next to you has the potential to be carrying the virus you'll probably be left wondering how you caught the virus.

He asked,
"Why was the swine flu in 2012 that both infected and killed many, many, many more (like a couple of orders of magnitude more) US citizens not a crisis, but this is?" One reason is the messages coming from the administration have been muddled, confused, and sometimes contradictory. I just gave you a few examples of that. It looks very much like the people in charge don't know what they're doing, and that tends to panic people.

^100% correct. He should just let the medical experts do the talking and then thank them and disappear.
