The Persians, the people of Iran, are great people. Your average Iranian is not a religious zealot and has a deep affinity for the US and its culture. I feel bad for the virus ravaging their country and I wish death on no one. That said, as this virus seems to be most deadly to the generation that has an iron grip on power in that country and has kept them backwards and impoverished for a generation. Long term, this may actually be a good thing for their country as the moderate youth may finally be able to move aside their current leadership.

Iranians are no more religious zealots than Americans are. This virus is in no way whatever (including in the way suggested by legion's comment) good for the country. My partner is Iranian and her parents and siblings are all in Tehran. It's tough on them, and that's tough on her, too.
