The ear notch indicates its been spayed, so it it was probably feral at one time, but that cat has definitely been around humans.

We have a couple of strays that we "inherited" that have notches, but don't display any signs of ever being feral

They were probably feral kittens that someone took in to get spayed/neutered with the intent of managing population control. They may have fed them on a regular basis so they got used to people. Our neighbor fed a group feral kittens before she moved but never spayed or neutered them. We were able to trap them to get spayed/neutered and the vets clipped their ears as a way to identify that a cat's already been through this procedure. So if its got a clipped ear its been spayed/neutered and was at least feral as a kitten . Our group is all grown up now and a few of them are super comfortable being picked up played with, basically normal cats.

Epilogue?

I had not heard from the other would-be owner for a few days, and I couldn't take the cat in to get scanned, so I bought a chip reader on Amazon. Results were iffy: all of our indoor cats are chipped, but it only read 3 of them. It didn't pick up anything on the Mystery Cat, but it did on a couple of the other freeloaders I mean strays. The other problem is once you do have a chip ID, it's not easy to look up. The free lookup services I found on the 'net only found one of the 6 chips I was able to read, and then it just points you to a registry, which to have to call to proceed further.

The lady called again on Saturday, and was going to come over Sunday to check out the cat. No show. She called again today and finally came by this afternoon. The cat was chilling in our backyard, and she starts yelling "PSSSS PSSSSH PSSSSP " - every single cat was freaked out and headed for the hills. I was finally able to coax the cat back and brought him over, and she start that crap again, which freaked out the cat and he took off and hid. Long-story-short, she doesn't think it's her cat, and she definitely didn't make a good impression. That's how you call a dog, not a cat.

About an hour later I'm working on the Unimog and Mystery Cat just walks up and just climbs in my lap.

Yesterday he climbed up on the roof to watch me work in the yard.

I guess he's my cat now.

You don't adopt them, they adopt you.

It may come in handy if you run out of food. But then, that's where SARS came from too.

Chances someone wanting your stray cat are slim. Heck even the former owners don't want it anymore.

I had neighbor cat move in with me
he was buds with my cat Boris (the one with the white), who he had met as kitten when mine went to raid the food bowl (he was a fiend, always hungry). Then that stupid cow got herself a baby.
So he liked his peace n quite and the fud was better on my end.
My girl cat Jackie Brown(black one) was in luv with the handsome stranger, but she' was all hard to get with him (and sterlized)..

Because her cat no longer came in the house (she saw him on the fence of our gardens tho), she decided to get a chihuahua..
That little turd then got beaten up by my cats. and wouldn't leave the house anymore.
So screaming baby barking ratdog.. very small house..
I think she then gave the chihuaha to her sister and the baby ran away

or could be the other way around, can't remember.

Was a very good looking ginger cat tho.. to bad he ran his dumbass under a truck while chasing a wabbit. That was 3 years ago to the day.

Cats know a good home when they come across one.

Nice save and willingness to give this guy a new loving home.
