Gas pump won't fill portable gas can?
Never had this happen before: tried to fill plastic gas can with 89 non-ethanol for my small motors. The pump just wouldn't pump it into the can. Tried it in my car, worked fine, so must be some kind of ground sensing?
Is there a workaround?

Does the pump have the seal collar? I've had to manually pull back the seal collar on the nozzle to fill some gas cans.

^ Yes, Pull back the vapor recovery seal as far back as it will go. This will allow the gas to flow.

It's supposed to collect the fuel vapor/fumes instead of allowing them to float into the atmosphere. It's probably much more prevalent in areas that get hot (causing fuel to evaporate) or maybe very low humidity.
I remember as a kid, if you filled a car REALLY full and then parked in full sun in the summer, it was possible for the fuel to expand due to the heat enough for fuel to weep (pour) out of the fuel inlet around the cap seal.

Nope. It was a new pump but plain metal nozzle with the metal wire wrapped around it. I'll try a different station next time.

It keeps gas fumes from coming out of the tank so you can smoke while you fill up.

Make sure the nozzle is facing down, and there is no fuel covering the vent hole at the nozzle tip. |

It must have been that attitude sensing ball, which may make for a big problem the next time I have to fill the old 911.
