Why don't you people think that jumping a red light is a crime!. It's careless driving at the least, if not reckless endangerment

Not when the camera vendors shorten the yellow phase.......fuchthem.

Many of the cameras were yanked because of illegal practices. Here's on instance in a city in TN:

The city of Chattanooga, Tennessee will refund $8800 in red light cameras tickets issued to motorists trapped by an illegally short yellow time. Municipal Court Judge Russell Bean on Monday dismissed charges against 176 vehicle owners cited by an automated ticketing machine located at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Pine Street.

Last month, a motorist challenged his citation by insisting that the yellow light was too short and only remained lit for 3.0 seconds before changing to red and activating the camera. LaserCraft, the private vendor that runs the camera program in return for a cut of the profits, provided the judge with a computer database that asserted the yellow was 3.8 seconds at that location. Bean gave the motorist the benefit of the doubt and watched the video of the alleged violation while counting how long the light stayed yellow.
Here's an article in Knoxville:

Tennessee Public Chapter 998 amended TCA 55-8-198 on April 27, 2016, by adding: “Non-payment of this [“notice” or “citation”] cannot adversely affect your credit score or report, driver’s license, and/or automobile insurance rates.”

I think every single recipient of a ticket needs to “rat out” the mayor of the city that issues them as the driver. How long do you think this will last when the mayor gets 5,000 court summons a day?

:)

Seriously? I mean, sure, a red light can be blown thru like an idiot, but those cameras don't care if there is not another car for a mile and you've come to a stop and go -as if it was a stop sign.

They also don't care if you are operating a 17' box truck and realize that it is far safer to hit the late yellow than to attempt a rapid braking maneuver - "That'll be $75.00, spank you very much". :D

$75? Sheeeeit. That would be an absolute bargain compared to the average "red light" ticket.

That was the cost here in the DFW area of TexASS before they were gotten rid of - I earned three of them for rolling a late yellow (paid them, too, as I did not want any potential future interactions with system, plus I deserved them).

Eric Coffey 04-08-2020 09:40 PM

I think they are $250+ here. And if you think that's exorbitant, just think of the children you animal!

Rawknees'Turbo 04-08-2020 09:56 PM

Ha ha - that's right, "The children"!

Funny thing about my red lighters is that I knew I was probably pushing it, but when I got the tickets, the pics always showed my vehicle entering the intersection after the light was already red, which I do not remember being the case. So maybe as was mentioned above, the yellow duration was being manipulated for maximum $$$.

petrolhead611 04-08-2020 11:49 PM

You are supposed to slow down approaching a light in case it changes. Every time I drive in the US I see most people drive at the posted limit or more near the light and then brake hard at the last possible moment. You are supposed to stop for red lights even if there is nothing coming the other way, end of: having a sense of over- entitlement is not an excuse

KFC911 04-09-2020 02:12 AM

^^^^ No one is talking about blowing through red lights here, or other unsafe things. These "short duration" yellows were in fact causing skid marks to appear at many intersections. A real cop would NEVER write someone up for my violation ....but the camera "money grab" did...it was total B$ :(

There is an old intersection design concept called "interval of uncertainty" - you don't know how long any given yellow will last. And have to weigh your stopping distance available vs clearing the space w/o incident.

Of course lights are MUCH more sophisticated than when we were kids. They now have sensors in the pavement and one direction going red does not make the other intersection get an immediate green.

And yet, the rent-seeking camera trolls put in 100's of thousands in equipment to net millions in revenue. ....er, I mean enforce safety.

GH85Carrera 04-09-2020 01:11 PM

What we need is a green light camera system!

Change the red light cameras to focus on the first car after the light changes, especially the left turn lane. So often the first car is not paying any attention to the road, they are busy texting. Any driver that has their head down looking at the thier phone and not the traffic gets a ticket! No cheating the light is possible. And also watch for turn signals, no turn signals, get a ticket.

Yea, that will happen! ;)
