Gilmour or Page ?
My son and I are having a heated argument , we are just about ready to throw down .
DG is one of my all time favorite guitarists . Even though, I probably prefer Glimour's style, I simply cannot say, that he is a better player than Page. I may even give the nod to Page . My son, says Gilmour all day over Page . Better in every aspect . Help restore some peace in my household this morning . Who is your preference? Technically speaking who do you think is the better player ? Hey, its better than talking about the riots.

Both. They are my fav in different styles. That said, if I could only listen to one GROUP it would be Zeppelin.
A better question would be Wakeman or Emerson?

Page for me.
Recently had a very similar debate with my son, but from a slightly later era - Marr or Weller? We were divided. I went Marr, he said Weller. |

Gilmour.
Page has serious chops. He was revolutionary. He arguably invented hard rock. But, for listening pleasure, Gilmour paints a sonic landscape that is so very pleasurable. He transcends technique and brings the art to a manifestation that is almost spiritual. (No, I am not high) At 54, I have seen my appreciation for Gilmour increase. My appreciation for Page is the same as it was when I was 14. Also, Stevie and Jimi are somewhere in this conversation. As is Keith. But please, please please, don't count Mr Clapton. I think this thread may go for a while. |

They're both among my top 5 favorites, but who's better, technically speaking? I'd have to say Gilmour. He's more nuanced and relies more on technical methods, such as bending strings, sliding, hammering, etc. His scales are also more complicated - I think. Page relies more on volume and cool sound settings, and just plain badassness, but he's also great, technically. Gilmour is just a little more so. IMO.
But are they best of all, technically? IDK. What about Steve Howe and Marc Knopfler? Hendrix has to be in there.

Page is probably a better guitarist technically. I prefer DG simply because Pink Floyd’s music is much more sonically pleasing and thoughtful. I love Zeppelin though.

Page is better at his style of playing, Gilmour is better at his style. Plus Gilmour did not sell his soul to the devil, AFAIK ![]() If I had a chance to hang out with one of them for a day and jamb a little and listen to them play, I'd pick Gilmour every time even though I had Zep posters on my bedroom walls as a kid. |

Page of course has a lot of talents, but i never knew he was thought of as a particularly great or skilled guitar *player*.

Better/worse is the wrong metric I think as it is completely subjective. Both are epic guitarists that changed the world of music in their time. These were two primary influences in my formative years and I could not pick a clear winner. Which one do you prefer?
Rembrandt or Michelangelo?
