Vitamin D

Apparently, everyone has dangerously low levels of D in their blood, unless they are specifically taking supplements.
Dr. John Campbell in UK got me looking into this a month or more back. If you are not taking 4000 or more IU per day of D3, you might want to read up on it. Cheap prevention for all kinds of viruses and colds...
The darker your skin, the less efficient your body is in taking in D from sunlight, as well.
Just sayin.

Even worse if you live in the PNW.

Oregon / Washington are the multiple sclerosis and serial killer capital of the US.

HOW TRUE!

I could cite some extensive medical journals here supporting your fact (not claim.)

Low vitamin D levels were the reason for my 10 year old nephew’s alopecia.

Luckily we stumbled on Vitamin D deficiency as the source. 2 years later he had his color and hair back.

My MD recommends 100,000 units a week.

My question would be how did my ancestors in northern latitudes get to be 80+ years old if this was such a big deal? I guarantee they had vit D deficiencies just as I do, even in summer, being outdoors (albeit mostly covered) a lot.

That said, I recently started with 5k IU and will keep it up until the next blood test to see if it lifts me in the normal range. It is supposed to help with the immune system, which we definitely want to have optimized currently.

I thought most healthy folks were generally OK with getting vitamin D via natural sources (sun & diet), as D is stored in the fat and accessed when needed.
Just don't go crazy with supplements to the point you put yourself at risk for calcium toxicity in the blood.

Yes. You should get a baseline serum level established first

I agree. Lots of research to support benefits and need for Vit D. Consider taking with Vit K2.

Studies show this is a common misconception about sunshine and milk and OJ, etc. being adequate. The levels there were defined to eliminate rickets in children, and this only needs a rather low level in the blood. Something like 4 or 5 times that level is what is said to be a good level for adults to have strong immune systems and such. The only caution seems to be excess calcium build up with mega dosing.

10000 IU per day for example is considered a safe amount for healthy adults.

Negative. Land locked. Maybe a trout or a can of sardines twice a year when they were lucky. Milk and potatoes mainly. That's before Vitamin D fortified milk.

I used to drink the shyte out of Grade A, Pasteurized, Homogenized Vitamin D milk. Like almost a half gallon a day.

Don't drink it much anymore but the Doc did put me on D vitamins.

IDK, they don't add that much to milk as already pointed out earlier. If you are below the recommended serum level you need to put in at least 3k IU to get somewhere. Milk has a max of 85 per 100 ml, so half galon a day would probably be 1.5k IU or less.
Drinking that much milk sure has down sides that are larger than the upside of the vitam D!

I take 4000 IU daily per doctors orders, but I also have a kidney disease so there’s that.

Its a standard joke among collegues. When ever we have a kid where we are not able to find anything somatically wrong but the parents are not satisfies (a rather large group) we always analyse Vit D. We know the values are below the reference level in a large majority so now we can tell the parents we have found the problem. Recommending substitute and relying on a combination of natural course of wellness and placebo. Its a life saver for a pediatrician.
On a serious note, there are individuals with low levels of Vit D that does have health implications but those are far between in a pediatric setting. At least among caucasians.

I have been taking Vit D for many years. I dismissed the idea (I hate taking any kind of pill) when my Doc suggested I start taking a Vit D supplement.

silver - I didn't know about skin color and the ability to absorb Vit D.

i hoping my daily regimen of naked lunges in my backyard gives me a V-D boost. i should seriously consider putting a fence between my yard and the public trail that runs adjacent.
