Oh crap, that’s a damn shame. What a great guy and what a great life he led.

I grew up reading about his exploits in Road & Track. Then I saw him in the late '60's at a Riverside Can Am race. At the time I think he was on retainer by J-Wax as a spokesman. He was standing alone in the garage area by himself looking like a lost soul while the race was going on. Even then he probably would have been faster than 80% of the field (and he knew it) and clearly missed having a go with Gurney, Hill (Graham & Phil), McLaren, Surtees & one or two others.

Ahhhh, the good old days with R&T and Moss...

R&T did an April Fool's Road Test on Stirling Moss himself in about '61, saying he was a ROBOT, not a human being. 'It' was named Stirling (after the British Pound) and MOSS (for 'Ministry of Speed Sports). His forehead wrinkles were cooling louvers, etc.
Still have the issue somewhere.
I read every word in the 50's and 60's (and later)

Every year they did an April 1st test on odd things, GY Blimp, SF Cable Car, etc.

What an incredible racer... (not driver) .... racer...

He was truly one of the greats...RIP Stirling Moss. He was still active in motoring events while in his 80s and even survived a 3-story fall down an open elevator shaft just 10 years ago.

Quite a while back, I saw him at the Concorso Italiano during Monterey Car Week. He was sitting all alone under a tree, just taking in the scene. I guess most didn't even noticed that a living legend was right there among them.

I remember when he wadded an expensive RS61 at Laguna about 10 years ago. Going a mite fast for early morning conditions...

Yes, Stirling Moss, a name from my youth that connoted excellence and emulation. Mentioning his name outside the racing arena still gathered recognition and admiration. Someone who not only was at the apex of their field, but was a model for others in and out that endeavor. A highly respected man of skill and grace.

Stein Eriksen in skiing, Phil Edwards in surfing, and Arnold Palmer in golf are similarly ensconced in my past. When one passes, the reality of lost youth rushes to the forefront.

RIP, Mr. Moss.

My Fav Stirling Moss Quote:

There are two things no man will admit he cannot do well: drive and make love.
