stimulus checks/ACA/owe IRS help please !!!
I apologize up front for the long post , what a mess I have . My wife and I are retired and have an ACA health plan/insurance . The plan we are on now is quite good , the one we were on last year SUCKED !!! Long story short my wife's ONE kidney stone ended up costing us $20,000.00 out of pocket for what the health insurance wouldn't cover .
So we dipped into our nest egg because that's what it is for along with buying toys :D . Anyway when we had our taxes done this year it turns out we owe $8,000.00  because we went over the 67K max you can make per ACA rules . Because ACA is subsidized by the government anything over 67K they want their sudsidy back . Unfortunately I did not know that ........... I know it now ! So in theory my wife and I qualify for each of us to receive a stimulus check , but we don't believe we will receive them because we owe the IRS . I " think " our checks will go to pay down our balance does anyone know if that is correct ? Because of the pandemic payment to the feds has been pushed back to July . How can I find out between now and then if my " owed " balance is less than the 8K ? Just rough numbers two stimulus checks @ 1200.00 = 2400.00 , subtract 2400.00 from 8K we should owe aprox. 5600.00 . But how to confirm this ? I'm not sure a call to the IRS is wise if you know what I mean :D . Help from the smart folks please ;) |
They just today added a 'find my stimulus refund' area to the IRS site.
It's at www.irs.gov |
In watching the daily Presidential updates in the last couple of weeks, it seems to me that at one time, someone (Mnuchin) had said that people will receive a stimulus without regard to whether they owe taxes or not.

My good friend owes back child support from 25 years ago......Attachments on his thru IRS means he's out of luck on this.......
|
^^^ Stevej37 YOU DA MAN !!! :D Thanks that is a great way to start . SmileWavy

This is what you see if you don't qualify, since I owe this year... Your request could not be completed ... We apologize but there seems to be an issue completing your request. Please try again in a few minutes. Return to IRS.gov home Error from: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof-wmsp/ |

To the OP.
The stimulus check is separate from any tax liability. You will receive it based on your processed tax filing from 2018 if you have not filed yet for 2019. It is based on your AGI, and is not deducted from any outstanding tax liability. This is not a tax refund. It is a stimulus which is intended to be spent by the recipient. |
OK so I go on the gov website yesterday and it's overwhelmed so I try again this morning . I put in my basic info and I get a message that I am due the payment . Great . So then we go deeper into the weeds and they want more details and I provide those details . Hit enter and an error message stating info doesn't match their records  . It suggests if you are using recent tax info ( I was ) to use 2018 so I did . Received the same error message then they timed me out  and stated try again in 24 hours .
Our bank info has not changed and my wife collects SS so they have at least her info she's going to try the website today and see what it say's for her . Fun times we're going to be put through the wringer just to turn around and hand it back to the feds :( . |
I had the same results. Gave up for the time being.
Then this morning I read on yahoo news that four or five of the major tax preparers are being blocked for some reason (temporarily) H&R...which I used, is one of them. I'll look for the story and post a link if I find it. |
|
'Consumer-law expert Vijay Raghavan told The Post the hiccup occurred because the IRS did not have direct-deposit information for people if they got an advance on their tax refund or if they had their tax prep fee pulled out of their refund.'
I think the second part of that is what happened to me. I remember walking out without paying on the spot for my return filing. |
Last year we received a federal tax refund that was direct deposited into our checking account so they have the info . Or at least they should . Nothing has changed since then............ Except this year we had H&R Block do our taxes . But if I use the previous years tax filing info I still get the error message . It's frustrating that the error message doesn't specify what the error is just that there is one .
|
"or if they had their tax prep fee pulled out of their refund."
Did they do this? I have used H&R the last four years...direct bank deposit each year. But this year I must have had the fee covered by the refund. |

I been using turbotax for years, but the e-file is always free, and the money comes directly to us. We've already gotten our money. |
I'm going to give it some time. I would first maybe try calling H&R to see what they say...might be faster.

^^^ That's the problem then. They're looking at that with no bank info
|
You might be able to speed it up by adding the bank info..otherwise it'll come by a check.
|
The good part is...if you wait for a check, you'll get one with Trumps pic on it.
edit: I thought it was his pic..but it's only his signature. oh well |

We couldn't get H&R Block on the phone so we sent an email . Our preparer confirmed we do qualify for $2400.00 stimulus check and the IRS will go back to previous year to find our data . So if they do that they will see all the info they need to deposit into our checking .
I guess if for any reason the IRS can't find our bank info they will send a paper check as last resort . So for now we wait . I will update if/when we receive results . Thanks again guys 😊 |

I was able to enter my bank info but it has now been several days and every time I check it, it always says "We have your bank info and once we know your payment date, we will post that information here" Don't know if I missed the first wave or payments but still got nothing and they had my bank info the whole time. |
I believe the issue is that they are only looking for info on your most recent return.
If you already filed in 2019 and did not provide direct deposit info for whatever reason, they are not looking further back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I read somewhere this am that if you file form SSA-1099 (for retired ss recipients) your check will be delayed to later in the month.

Minor update :D : This morning I went on the gov website and successfully added our bank info , confirmed by the website as a successful transaction . I will check the " status " of our refund next week to see what it say's .
|
^^^ I just now, did the same...went well.
Almost all the people/friends around here that I have talked to ...have not seen the bank deposit yet. |
Steve that is interesting as ALL of my family members have received theirs . My two sons , my mother in law and my older brother . I'm the black sheep 😂
|
Hey everyone so this morning I decided to check the website and see if any progress . Unfortunately I still get a message stating they need my direct deposit info :( , you gotta love government efficiency :D . I don't believe there is much I can do other than wait .
|
When you're checking on the IRS website, what kind of address did you give? Did you include the "St" or "Dr" or whatever? What about apartments?
The site doesn't seem to recognize that either me or my wife exist, and I'm wondering if I'm just being stupid when trying to put information into the search. I also think the Feds hate us, they've had large (5 figure) returns where the "Find my Return" page has the money appear, disappear, pretend as if we never filed, then suddenly a check arrives several months later. WTF? |
For me it worked either way. Drive or dr.
Mine came through today. The system give me the generic no go message, then one day it gave the eta and bank info. Portal is only updated every 24 hours. |

If filing as 'single' and your AGI is over 75K...they have said, it will not be sent in the first few waves of deposits. (because of reducing the payment)
I don't know what the amt. is for filing other than single...but that would be delayed also. I haven't seen mine yet either...for that reason. |
I just logged into the website and it now states we are owed the stimulus payment AND that it will be direct deposited to account *** which is the data we supplied the other day . The website states it is updated once a day and that it will eventually show our payment as being deposited . So we're making baby steps :D forward .
