I thought masks were to protect others

I have many different procedures in place for detecting counterfeit bills at my store. All of the staff has been trained to detect fake bills. But as usual it does not effect them when a counterfeit is passed so they do not even look twice. I am going through the envelope for Monday and immediately I see a fake $100 bill not even close to being a good fake. So I check my receipts to see who took it and what time, then I go to my cameras to see who passed it and guess what? The person has on a surgical mask, hat, sunglasses and a hoodie. So much for their mask protecting me. I guess the scammers are not staying home and staying safe. Bad enough sales are down 49% but now I am out another $100 this week.

Damn.

I got caught by a group of 4 grandparenty looking folks when I was about 20 and working at a retail auto-parts store. It was a decent fake, looked good, but felt funny. I didn't think "maybe this is fake", probably in a large part because they looked like 4 nice old folks. When my mgr brought it to my attention, I could have kicked myself, then wanted to punch an old crook or two.

I'd be short one employee as well.

Bill Douglas 04-16-2020 07:04 PM

Damn. And with the bars closed you can't pass it onto someone else.

Arizona_928 04-16-2020 07:32 PM

In CA they won't let you into a store without a mask, bandana... something. I left all my gatornecks, and wore a spare t shirt as a "mask". No one batted an eye.

You can be openly robbing people, and none would be the wiser.

Yeah, I agree. Whoever trained these cashiers to spot fake bills is costing the company money.

island911 04-16-2020 08:27 PM

Really? You need to be trained not to take monopoly money?

herr_oberst 04-16-2020 08:44 PM

Apparently, yes.

Unfortunately I am already short 6 employees who refuse to work. This one at least comes in so firing her now is not the best option. We have many procedures in place including a UV light, pen and even a machine Any of which would have detected this in a second, none of these were used. Here is the POS in action when you watch the whole video you can see it is a woman

Ouch. Sorry.

I have a long time car repair customer who works behind the register at the Sheetz station. She will scrub down my bills like a boss and the video of the transaction is the reason.

They will fire her if she is caught not checking.

Scammers never sleep....always looking for the next way to avoid honest employment !

Mike80911 04-17-2020 04:54 AM

Normally I would fire someone who blatantly disregards procedures and cost me money but with all that is going on I feel that the employees coming to work everyday and helping me keep the doors open are owed my gratitude and respect. The dedicated hard working girl who needs this job should not lose her job because of a POS who takes advantage of her. I even told my wife If we make it through this everyone who came to work and helped us will receive a bonus for their loyalty. I am getting everyone together today to watch the video and go over procedures again. Next step is to stop taking $100 bills, this is difficult though as the area we are in is a very affluent area and people paying with $100 bills is very common.

Used to work in a bank. Thought it was pretty interesting how bad all the counterfeits were. At least the ones we found. It was the paper. Course the bank knows who deposited it so its the customer that is scammed.

Im surprised youre still taking cash.

A nice touch of mercy will go a long ways towards cementing that procedure into her head.

Document this so you can toss the employee after we get back to work. You'll want the documentation as you can count on unemployment tax rates going through the roof.

Obvious fakes being taken could mean you've got someone in cahoots! 'i won't check the bill and you'll have a mask, glasses and hoodie on'

Yep...bet she never takes another one either. Strange times we are in....I'll give folks a "pass"...except for scammers and thieves...they always suck :(

Best to you Mike....

Back in the olden days before PowerPoint and everyone with computers I did the slides for an actual slide show for a Secret Service agent. It was all about the counterfeiting and how they catch people, and how to detect the fakes. I had a dedicated computer and I built the graphics on a very expensive program and he approved them, then I would make super high res color slides with a film recorder.

Anyway while going through the information, we chatted and he said the vast majority of fake bills are very easy to spot if the clerk just looks at them a little. One thing that was common at the time is to get a legit $20 and cut the number 20 off the corner. Cut the different corners off of different bills and stick them on a one. Most clerks never look at the face, just the number in the corner. The scammer just made $19. That is common for non pros. Now with modern scanners and printers is is easier, but most have software built into them to not scan US money.

[QUOTE=berettafan;10827960] You'll want the documentation as you can count on unemployment tax rates going through the roof.

I believe that employers who lay-off or furlough employees whom then file for unemployment will not have their rates affected during this time.
