Now you need to figure out how to connect it to an air compressor like those bb machine guns that they have at the county fair.

no, amazingly they are not considered firearms. Although the big stuff is quite obviously lethal. I may or may not be considering a .50cal
It’s even legal to have suppressors. It’s like a whole new world I didn’t know was out there - and I can shoot on property without pissing off neighbors.

I've read the book about it, but always have wondered about the air gun that Lewis and Clark carried.
Did it compare to the air guns today? Was it pumped the same way?
The book didn't explain it much..just that it was very unique for it's time.

I took a very deep plunge into the world of precision airguns many years ago. The high quality "adult" air guns available today are truly impressive. I have a pretty fair number of Weihrauch and RWS rifles and pistols of the spring-piston and single stroke pneumatic variety, and a few Sheridan and Benjamin multi-pump pneumatics, both new and vintage. I have not yet gotten into the PCP (God, it even sounds like a drug ) platform yet, although it does look intriguing.

Be mindful of your local laws - just because these ship to your home with no FFL, waiting period, or background check, don't assume they are "not a firearm". The feds don't see them as such, but many municipalities do. My town, for example, considers a wrist-rocket a "firearm". Pea shooters and spit wads as well. Anything that propels a projectile is a "firearm" and cannot legally be discharged within city limits.

Understood about local laws Jeff, thanks. It’s legal to discharge a firearm in my local township anyway (I’m in a relatively rural area on about 15 acres), so I’m hopeful these things are quiet enough for back yard target practice, although it does look like some of the higher caliber PCP stuff can get loud. Doing more research....

I can get away with shooting in my back yard. All of my neighbors are shooters. The spring-piston guns are very quiet even without any sort of suppressor, but the pneumatics have a real "crack" to them, especially when pumped to full power. I'm sure if I had any neighbors who objected, the pneumatics would be off limits. They would never hear the springers, though.

It required a separate pump, and stored its air supply in a spherical chamber under the forearm, ahead of the trigger guard. It was extremely expensive to manufacture, and rather finicky. I believe it was somewhere around .50 caliber, and closely matched tho power and accuracy of a normal muzzle loader of the period, while being more reliable in bad weather.

The Brits used similar air rifles in the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon actually decreed that anyone caught with one be summarily executed. With the relatively mild report, and lack of smoke, it was difficult to tell where the shot had come from. He didn't like that at all...

The book went on to say how impressed the Natives were of the air gun. They had seen the muzzle loaders..but this was entirely new to them. Smart move by L&C

If I could shoot my PCP air gun in my backyard it would vastly change my social isolation frame of thought.

I have a Hatsun. And a floor pump to give me air damn near forever. It’s a good abs workout.
