Thanks Baz... Australia wide, we did the service on our driveways with our neighbours.

This photo was taken at Wayville showgrounds, Adelaide at the start of WW1.
It was being used as a barracks at the time.

I was in the driveway at dawn too. I spoke the names of friends and family who served.

I could see a few neighbors up and down the road out in their driveways paying their respects.

We did #standatdawn from our driveway in Christchurch, NZ.

As close as I could get today to my mother Anne who was wearing my late father’s medals for Anzac Day. She’d just read the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ over the PA to all the residents at her Aged Care home.

Thanks and solemn memorials to you ANZACs from the American cousins. Here's a picture of the AIF Cemetery in Flers, the Somme region of France.

The area was initially a German headquarters but was taken by the Kiwis in 1916 and held with the Aussies until it was lost in the German 1918 Offensive. The Australians and New Zealanders retook it again before the end of the war. That's four changes of control.

We visited the Somme two years ago and stayed at a bed and breakfast just up the road from here.

I hope to visit the Somme, Passchendaele and other old WW1 and 2 battlegrounds in Europe. I almost made it to Messines in Belgium a few years ago but it fell through.

I have the utmost admiration on this day. I have had the privilege to serve along side of some remarkable people being remembered today.

My best to all the men and women who have served so well and honorably.

I was talking to an Australian WWII spitfire pilot.

Spitfire canon didn't have the muzzle velocity to penetrate the armour on German tanks.
His solution was to put the aircraft into a dive and pull out to level flight at 50 feet, the extra velocity from the dive would then allow the canon rounds to penetrate the armour if fired close enough to the target.
He came up with that tactic in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, and he said it worked well. He did say by the time he was flying in Italy "with the trees and everything, pulling out at 50 feet got a bit hairy at times."

He was 23 at the time.

A better man than I will every be, and a better man than almost any I have ever met.

My great grandfather used to tell me about the landing when I was an early teen. It always brought him to tears. I still remember him saying that he'd seen things a teenager should have never have to see. His most horrific recollection was of his friend Charlie. Charlie was hit by a shell. Grandfather said all they could do was pick up the pieces they could find and put them in a bag. "I never thought a man would fit in a small backpack" he said.
Grandfather was one tough s.o.b and rarely spoke of the war, but when he did I was all ears.

I done a job for a beautiful old lady many years ago now. She was a nurse in WWII. She told me stories of her days in Egypt. One statement that struck me that she said was " Scott...what was all it for? I lost count of the mens hands I held and whose foreheads I caressed as they passed away. All sides lost many people. Innocent men, women and children. Lots who did not want be there. At the end of it, everybody just packed up and went home. Surely there had to be a better way."

The town honoured an old digger by hosting a motor parade past his home this morning. It was a fantastic experience.
