SOB!! My hands are on fire. Chili.

Wow. This has never happened to me before. Springtime is when I make my supply of Mexican Red Sauce. Seeding the pods, tearing them, toasting them, etc. my hands are burning! I really should have worn nitrile gloves. Ouch! They feel like a heat burn.

This is the first time I took the extra step of toasted the pods to bloom their flavors. Wake up the oils. It got me good.

I’m glad my wife was working, she usually helps me.

And I touched my Junk! I should have washed hand before as well as after that event.

This is a mild sauce too. Ancho, Pasilla, and California chili pods. Nothing nuclear.

Scrub good with dawn. Anything to break down the oils!

And for gods sake, don’t touch your eyes!

That's one of the first lessons I learned when I was green bench chemist.

A perfect segway into the much needed follow up thread "out of curiosity- What types of hand hygiene are you employing?"

Haha. But! You might be on to something. Maybe it’s the copious hand washing all month long has my hands so dry and chapped; and that’s why I got the burning sensation. Hmmm. This is seriously the first time chili pods affected me like this.

I am coming over for dinner. I am not afraid of your junk dirt. What ever it was on your hand, the chilli will kill off them all.

Yield was 6.6 qts.

6 qts ready for deep freeze. Half saved for tomorrow’s Juevos Rancheros.

Took a chance and bagged full qts and not halfers like I usually do.

I did this to myself a few years ago. I went online looking for a remedy. I did not find one, only tales of horror.

I used engine degreaser, dawn, baking soda, and soap and water. I spent two hours cleaning my hands.

It felt like a sunburn. Annoying, but I was able to sleep. I think it lasted about 24 hours.

How about a recipe?
We'll have habanero, jalapeno, serrano, and something called California Fire (that I've never grown before and know nothing about). We always throw tons away, as the plants produce more than we can use. I'd like to make some red sauce to freeze for the winter.

Vash,
Have you considered a good quality vacuum sealer? I have a Weston 2300 (older version of the 2600). I use the mason jar adaptor for sealing liquids. It is a great tool for all kinds of storage and freezing. Damn thing is built like a tank.
