I've driven vehicles like that suzuki all over the world from cuba to asia. They are quite popular.
If Landrovers used th be safari vehicle but now or for going out to a fancy dinner, then Kia and suzuki simple 4x4s are the new safari vehicles. I just got back from driving one in the wilds of Africa with my new girl. Im not sure if I was safer inside or outside the vehicle...;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1588812270.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1588812309.jpg |
i had the distinct honor if finding a driver in Cambodia that couldnt hold liquor. he got buzzed. i just wanted to drive.
i offered to drive. he pointed out directions (go around the elephant pulling rebar to ironworkers) it was a diesel Hilux. i spent the entire drive imagining it with an Ikon suspension lift, better bumpers, lighting, a winch, and sliders, 33" tires. the thing was a torquey little thing. as it sits, they look so anemic. like a honda pickup truck. |
Do want one! Last I heard, there was a 2 year waiting list for UK delivery. What's worse, Suzuki would have to significantly reduce the sales figure in order to meet the new fleet emissions average... So beyond the first year of waiting, they couldn't promise when you would actually receive your car! Not sure how much of that is true, but people were indeed selling low mileage ones at 25% over the sticker price, so the demand is definitely there.

When we were in St. Lucia last year I rented one to drive around, I wanted a new one, you get what they give you, so I got the previous generation. On the right in this pic. It was good to see nothing changed, I moved out to pass someone, floored it.... and nothing happened, I had a flashback to my Samurai days. For scooting around? It was a neat little car, would I own one? Maybe if the price was right. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-...-sxkGZgx-L.jpg |
I had a 1987 Samurai for about 8 years.
When I purchased it, I did a timing belt, all hoses, fluids and tires. I drove it very hard. The little 1.3 loved to rev. It was pretty bulletproof only needed a alternator & u joints in 8 years. It would haul ass going down hills in 5th. With any incline you would put it in 4th & keep it floored. My wife hated it she never felt safe in it. She said it's "Perfect for 3rd. world countries." Very awesome vehicle off road. Sold it in 1 day on Craig List for 4 times I paid for it. in November 2019. It served it's purpose. I don't miss it, Replaced it with a 2005 987 Boxster. Bernie |
I'd love it if I were into off-roading. These have been available in the Philippines for some time (the Samurai before Jimny) and was able to drive one, but not off-road.

Reviving this thread because I'm thinking about a Samurai/Jimny. Seem to be a lot of them for sale around here. Also, lots of 'newer' ones on carsfromjapan.com that were never sold here. I could buy up to a 1998, but RHD would be a PITA. I drove one for a week as a loaner many years ago and thought it was a blast. They seem to be between $8500 and $15,000 for good ones. Here's a few I've come across FS:

There are very few brand new cars I lust after but this is one of them
I'm sure it's tiny stature is lost on the American market but on smaller UK/European roads away from freeway's this is such a capable all year round go any where car Has a big cult following too, how about a Lancia Delta Integrale body kit for the WRC rally car look http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1705422593.jpg |
Curt, I think that the owner of the white one above might have Armoralled the tread on his tires. I guess that's one way to do a burnout in a Samarai. :)

Capt Ahab! Yes. I like that (where's the other 1/2 of the pic tho?). And I think the OZ rally wheels might even be the ticket on a Samurai  |

The Capt is probably off doing F1 stuff or something instead of focusing his priorities here ;) So a quick search shows that Damd is a Japanese tuner who does all sorts of body kits for the Jimny. I like the Bronco theme.

They are quite slow. A 1500cc engine and they don't like cruising at much more than 60mph. Good for around town and off roading.

Renault 5 turbo look is great but I prefer the Lancia Delta |
